EDGELEC 3mm Red & Green Blinking LED Diodes Instruction Manual

Model: ED_YT03_BLK-R&G_100Pcs

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper use, setup, and maintenance of your EDGELEC 3mm Red & Green Blinking LED Diodes. These diodes are designed for various electronic projects requiring bi-color (red and green) alternating flashing light at a frequency of 1.5Hz. Each package includes 100 LED diodes and 100 corresponding 430ohm resistors for use with DC 6-12V power sources.

2. Setup and Connection

The EDGELEC 3mm Blinking LED Diodes are designed for easy integration into electronic circuits. Proper connection is crucial for optimal performance and longevity.

2.1 Identifying LED Polarity

LEDs are polarized components, meaning they must be connected in the correct orientation. The longer lead of the LED is the anode (positive terminal), and the shorter lead is the cathode (negative terminal). For these blinking LEDs, the internal circuitry handles the alternating colors, but correct polarity for the overall power supply is still essential.

2.2 Resistor Connection

Each package includes 100 pieces of 430ohm, 1/4 Watt metal film resistors. These resistors are necessary when powering the LEDs with a DC voltage between 6V and 12V to limit the current and prevent damage to the LED. Connect one resistor in series with the LED (either on the anode or cathode side) before connecting to the power supply.

  • For DC 3.0V-3.2V power sources, resistors are generally not required.
  • For DC 6V-12V power sources, use the included 430ohm resistor in series with each LED.
  • Always calculate or verify the appropriate resistor value for voltages outside the recommended range to ensure safe operation.

2.3 Soldering Conditions

When soldering the LEDs, adhere to the following guidelines to prevent damage:

  • Manual Soldering: Less than 3 seconds with a temperature between 482°F (250°C) and 527°F (275°C).
  • Reflow Soldering: Less than 5 seconds with a temperature up to 500°F (260°C).

3. Operating Instructions

These 3mm LED diodes are designed for automatic bi-color blinking, alternating between red and green. Once correctly powered, they will begin flashing at a consistent rate.

  • Blinking Frequency: Approximately 1.5Hz (1.5 flashes per second).
  • Operating Voltage: DC 3.0V-3.2V (typical). Can be used with DC 6-12V with the included 430ohm resistor.
  • Luminance: Brighter up to +20% compared to standard LEDs.
  • Viewing Angle: 30 degrees.

Ensure your power supply matches the LED's voltage requirements or use the appropriate current-limiting resistor to prevent overcurrent and damage.

4. Maintenance and Storage

To ensure the longevity and performance of your LED diodes, follow these maintenance and storage recommendations:

  • Storage Conditions: Store in a dry environment. Keep away from fire or high temperatures.
  • Handling: Handle with care to avoid bending or damaging the leads. Avoid excessive force or sharp bends, especially near the LED body.
  • Cleaning: If necessary, gently clean the LED lens with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive materials or harsh chemicals.

5. Troubleshooting

If your LED diodes are not functioning as expected, consider the following common issues and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
LED does not light up.Incorrect polarity.Reverse the LED connection. Ensure the longer lead (anode) is connected to the positive supply.
LED is dim or flickers inconsistently.Insufficient voltage or current.Verify power supply voltage. If using a resistor, ensure it's the correct value for your voltage. Check for loose connections.
LED burns out quickly.Excessive voltage or current (no resistor or incorrect resistor value).Always use the included 430ohm resistor for DC 6-12V applications. Do not exceed the maximum forward current (IF=20mA).
Blinking is not occurring.Faulty LED or incorrect LED type.Ensure you are using the blinking type LED. Test with another LED from the batch.
