3.2. Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  2. Slide or unclip the cover to open the compartment.
  3. Insert the provided 9V alkaline battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover securely.

The device can also be powered by an external 5V power supply (not included) via its designated port.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1. Powering On/Off

Press and hold the power button to turn the device on or off. The LCD will illuminate upon power-on.

4.2. Mode Selection (RF / Gauss)

The ED 178S Plus operates in two main modes: RF (Radio Frequency) and Gauss (Magnetic Field). Use the dedicated mode button to toggle between these measurement modes. The active mode will be indicated on the LCD.

4.3. Understanding the Display

The graphical LCD provides various data representations:

  • Multi-digit Power Level Display: Shows real-time measurement values in selected units (dBm, mW/m², V/m for RF; uT, mGauss for Gauss).
  • Moving Histogram: Provides a visual trend of measurements over time.
  • Level Bar Display: An analog-style bar graph indicating current signal strength.
  • Color LED Segment: Three red LEDs indicate safety range (low, medium, high) for RF mode.

4.4. Key Functions

  • Hold: Freezes the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
  • MAX: Displays the maximum value recorded since the function was activated.
  • Average: Shows the average measurement value over a period.
  • Sound Output: Activates an audible tone proportional to the signal strength.
  • Audio Alarm: Configurable alarm that triggers when a set threshold is exceeded.
  • Calibration Correction: Allows for fine-tuning of measurements (refer to advanced settings in the full manual for details).

4.5. Data Logging

The ED 178S Plus features a data logging capability to record measurements over time. Up to 50 hours of data can be stored internally. Data includes RF level, RF frequency, and magnetic field level. Recorded data can be displayed on the LCD or transferred to a PC via a USB serial interface (cable not included) for further analysis.

Consult the full user manual for detailed instructions on initiating, managing, and exporting logged data.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Cleaning

Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the casing or display. Ensure no liquids enter the device.

5.2. Battery Replacement

When the battery indicator shows low power, replace the 9V alkaline battery as described in Section 3.2. Remove the battery if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

5.3. Storage

Store the ED 178S Plus in its EVA carrying case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid storing in areas with high humidity or corrosive gases.

6. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Device does not power on.Low or dead battery; incorrect battery installation.Replace the 9V battery or ensure it is installed with correct polarity. Check external power supply connection if used.
No readings displayed.Device in HOLD mode; no detectable signal; incorrect mode selected.Deactivate HOLD function. Ensure a signal source is present. Verify correct mode (RF or Gauss) is selected for the measurement type.
Inaccurate readings.Interference from other electronic devices; device not calibrated.Move away from other electronic devices. If persistent, consider professional calibration or refer to the full manual for calibration correction procedures.
Data logging not working.Memory full; incorrect logging settings.Check available memory. Review data logging instructions in the full manual to ensure correct setup. Transfer data to PC to free up memory.
