5. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your PLX-500-K turntable for the first time.

5.1 Unpacking and Placement

  1. Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Retain the packaging for future transport or storage.
  2. Place the turntable on a stable, level surface, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive dust or vibrations. Ensure adequate space around the unit for ventilation.

5.2 Assembling the Turntable

  1. Install the Platter: Carefully place the platter onto the center spindle. Ensure it sits securely.
  2. Place the Slipmat: Lay the included slipmat on top of the platter.
  3. Attach the Headshell: Insert the headshell (with cartridge and stylus pre-installed) into the front end of the tonearm. Turn the locking ring clockwise to secure it.
  4. Attach the Counterweight: Slide the counterweight onto the rear of the tonearm. Rotate it to adjust the tracking force.
  5. Install the Dust Cover: Align the hinges of the dust cover with the slots on the back of the turntable and gently push down to secure.

5.3 Tonearm Calibration

Proper tonearm calibration is crucial for optimal sound quality and to prevent damage to your records and stylus.

  1. Zero Balance the Tonearm:
    • Remove the stylus protector.
    • Release the tonearm clamp.
    • Adjust the counterweight by rotating it until the tonearm is perfectly balanced horizontally (floating freely without touching the surface or rising).
    • Once balanced, hold the counterweight stationary and rotate only the numbered ring until '0' aligns with the center line on the tonearm.
  2. Set Tracking Force:
    • Rotate the entire counterweight (including the numbered ring) counter-clockwise to set the recommended tracking force for your cartridge. The factory-installed cartridge typically requires 3.0 grams.
  3. Set Anti-skate:
    • Set the anti-skate dial to the same value as your tracking force (e.g., 3 for 3.0 grams).
  4. Adjust Tonearm Height (VTA):
    • The PLX-500-K features adjustable tonearm height. For the included cartridge, the minimum setting is often suitable. Adjust as needed to ensure the tonearm is parallel to the record surface when playing. This can improve sound quality, especially in the high and low frequencies.

5.4 Audio Connections

Connect the turntable to your audio system.

  1. PHONO/LINE Switch: On the rear panel, set the PHONO/LINE switch according to your amplifier's input.
    • Set to PHONO if connecting to an amplifier with a dedicated PHONO input (which includes a phono pre-amplifier).
    • Set to LINE if connecting to an amplifier's LINE input (e.g., AUX, CD) or powered speakers without a built-in phono pre-amplifier. The PLX-500-K has a built-in pre-amplifier.
  2. RCA Audio Cable: Connect the red and white RCA plugs from the turntable to the corresponding input jacks on your amplifier or powered speakers.
  3. USB Connection (for Digital Recording): Connect the USB cable from the turntable's USB port to an available USB port on your PC or Mac. You will need to install Pioneer DJ's rekordbox software for recording.
  4. Power Connection: Connect the power cord to the turntable's power input, then plug it into an AC outlet.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will help prolong the life of your turntable and ensure optimal performance.

7.1 Cleaning the Unit

  • Always disconnect the power cord before cleaning.
  • Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the surface of the turntable. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water and a mild detergent, then wipe dry immediately.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, alcohol, benzene, or paint thinner, as these can damage the finish.
  • Keep the platter and spindle free of dust and debris.

7.2 Stylus Care

  • The stylus is a delicate component. Clean it regularly using a soft brush designed for stylus cleaning, brushing gently from back to front.
  • Avoid touching the stylus with your fingers.
  • Replace the stylus when you notice a decrease in sound quality or after approximately 300-500 hours of playback, depending on usage and record condition.

7.3 Dust Cover Care

  • Wipe the dust cover with a soft, dry cloth. For smudges, use a slightly damp cloth.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could scratch the clear plastic.
  • Always use the dust cover when the turntable is not in use to protect it from dust and accidental damage.
