Installation
Choosing a Location
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including basements.
- Place alarms inside and outside sleeping areas.
- For enhanced protection, install an alarm in every bedroom.
- Avoid placing alarms near cooking appliances, bathrooms with showers, or in garages where vehicle exhaust fumes are present.
- Maintain a distance of at least 20 feet from fuel-burning appliances to prevent nuisance alarms.
Mounting the Alarm
- Prepare Wiring (for hardwired installations): Ensure power is off at the circuit breaker before beginning. Connect the alarm's wiring harness (black, white, red wires) to your household wiring. Connect black to hot, white to neutral, and red to the interconnect wire (if applicable).
- Attach Mounting Bracket: Secure the mounting bracket to the ceiling or wall using the provided screws.
- Connect Wiring Harness: Plug the wiring harness into the receptacle on the back of the alarm.
- Activate Battery: Twist the alarm onto the mounting bracket until it clicks into place. This action activates the 10-year sealed battery. The alarm will chirp once, and the green LED will flash.
- Restore Power: Turn on power at the circuit breaker.

Wireless Interconnection
This alarm can be interconnected with up to 24 compatible Kidde devices (18 of which can be initiating devices like smoke, heat, or CO alarms) to create a synchronized alert system.
- Power On All Alarms: Ensure all alarms intended for interconnection are powered on and functioning.
- Initiate Pairing: On one alarm, press and hold the Test/Hush button until the alarm chirps and the green LED flashes rapidly.
- Pair Other Alarms: Within 60 seconds, press the Test/Hush button on each additional alarm you wish to interconnect. Each alarm will chirp and flash its green LED to confirm successful pairing.
- Test Interconnection: After pairing all units, press the Test/Hush button on any one alarm. All interconnected alarms should sound simultaneously.

Operation
Normal Operation
Under normal conditions, the green LED indicator will flash approximately once every 60 seconds, indicating that the alarm is powered and functioning correctly.
Alarm Conditions
- Smoke/Fire Detection: The alarm will sound an 85-decibel horn, and the voice alert will announce "Fire! Fire!". The red LED will flash rapidly.
- Error/Malfunction: The amber LED will flash, and the alarm may chirp, indicating a potential issue with the unit.
- End-of-Life: The alarm will announce "Replace Alarm!" when it reaches the end of its 10-year operational lifespan.
Testing the Alarm
Test the alarm weekly to ensure proper operation and familiarize yourself with the alarm sound.
- Press and hold the Test/Hush button firmly for a few seconds.
- The alarm will sound, and the voice alert "Fire! Fire!" will be heard.
- Release the button. The alarm will stop sounding.
Hush Feature
The Hush feature temporarily silences the alarm for approximately 10 minutes in case of a nuisance alarm (e.g., from cooking smoke or steam).
- Press the Test/Hush button during an alarm.
- The alarm will silence, and the voice alert "Hush mode activated" will be heard.
- The red LED will flash every 10 seconds during the hush period.
- If smoke is still present after 10 minutes, the alarm will reactivate.
Maintenance
Cleaning Your Alarm
Clean your smoke alarm at least once a month to remove dust and debris that could interfere with its operation.
- Disconnect power to the alarm (if hardwired) before cleaning.
- Gently vacuum the alarm's cover and vents using a soft brush attachment.
- Do not use cleaning solvents or spray directly on the alarm.
- Restore power after cleaning.
Battery Information
This alarm is equipped with a sealed 10-year lithium battery. The battery is not replaceable and is designed to power the alarm for its entire 10-year lifespan. Do not attempt to open the unit or replace the battery.
Ambient Light Sensing
The Ambient Light Sensing feature helps prevent low-battery chirps from occurring during dark conditions, such as at night. If the alarm detects a low battery, it will delay chirping until sufficient ambient light is detected, typically during daylight hours.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Alarm sounds "Fire! Fire!" | Smoke detected. | Investigate the source of smoke. If it is a nuisance alarm (e.g., cooking smoke), use the Hush feature. If it is a real fire, evacuate immediately. |
| Alarm chirps or amber LED flashes. | Malfunction or error with the unit. | Clean the alarm thoroughly. Test the alarm. If the problem persists, the unit may be faulty and should be replaced. |
| Alarm announces "Replace Alarm!" | End-of-life reached (approximately 10 years from activation). | The alarm has reached the end of its operational life. Replace the smoke alarm immediately with a new unit. |
| Alarm chirps at night. | Low battery chirp (delayed by Ambient Light Sensing until daylight). | This indicates the end of the alarm's life. The sealed battery is depleted. Replace the unit immediately. |
