4. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the effective operation of your line strainer. The strainer is equipped with 1" female NPT threads for connection to your plumbing system.

4.1 Installation Location

  • General Pumps: For most pump types, the line strainer should be installed on the pump's inlet (suction) side. This placement ensures that incoming fluid is filtered before reaching the pump, protecting its internal components from debris.
  • Centrifugal Pumps: For centrifugal pumps, the line strainer can be installed on either the inlet or discharge side. However, this decision must be based on the strainer's pressure rating, flow capacity, and other specific installation factors of your system. Always ensure the strainer's specifications are compatible with the chosen location's operating conditions.

4.2 Installation Steps

  1. Ensure the system is depressurized and drained before beginning installation.
  2. Apply appropriate thread sealant (e.g., PTFE tape or pipe dope) to the male NPT threads of your plumbing connections.
  3. Thread the strainer onto the pipe connections, ensuring a tight, leak-free seal. Do not overtighten.
  4. Verify that the flow direction through the strainer matches the intended system flow.
  5. After installation, slowly repressurize the system and check for any leaks.

5. Operating Instructions

The Hypro 3350-0058A Line Strainer operates passively by filtering fluid as it passes through the 20 mesh stainless steel screen. Its primary function is to prevent solid particles and debris from entering sensitive pump components or other downstream equipment.

  • Ensure the system operates within the strainer's rated pressure of 80 psi at 70°F (21°C).
  • Regularly monitor system performance for any signs of reduced flow or increased pressure drop, which may indicate a clogged screen.

6. Maintenance

Regular cleaning of the strainer screen is essential to maintain optimal system performance and prevent damage to your pump. The design allows for cleaning without removing the entire strainer from the line.

6.1 Cleaning Procedure

  1. Depressurize System: Before any maintenance, ensure the system is depressurized and isolated to prevent fluid release or injury.
  2. Unscrew Bowl: Carefully unscrew the transparent or black polypropylene bowl from the strainer cap.
  3. Remove Screen: Extract the stainless steel mesh screen from the bowl.
  4. Flush Sediment: Rinse the screen thoroughly with clean water to remove any accumulated sediment or debris. A soft brush may be used for stubborn particles. Inspect the screen for any damage or tears.
  5. Inspect O-Ring: Check the EPDM O-ring for any signs of wear, cracking, or damage. Replace if necessary (part number 1700-0092).
  6. Reassemble: Place the cleaned screen back into the bowl, ensuring it fits correctly onto the flange.
  7. Hand Tighten Bowl: Screw the bowl back onto the strainer cap. Hand tighten only to ensure a snug, leak-free seal. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the threads or O-ring.
  8. Repressurize System: Slowly return the system to operating pressure and check for leaks around the bowl.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues that may arise during the use of your Hypro line strainer.

7.1 Reduced Flow or Pressure Drop

  • Symptom: Noticeable decrease in fluid flow or an increase in pressure differential across the strainer.
  • Possible Cause: Clogged strainer screen due to accumulated debris.
  • Solution: Perform the cleaning procedure outlined in Section 6.1.

7.2 Leaks Around Strainer Bowl

  • Symptom: Fluid leakage from the connection between the strainer cap and bowl.
  • Possible Cause: Improperly seated O-ring, damaged O-ring, or loose bowl.
  • Solution: Depressurize the system, unscrew the bowl, inspect the O-ring (1700-0092) for damage and proper seating. Replace the O-ring if damaged. Reassemble and hand tighten the bowl.

7.3 General Application Note

Important: This line strainer is not designed for fatigue-loading applications, such as water-softeners. Using the strainer in such applications may lead to premature failure and is not covered under warranty.
