4. Setup and Installation

This housing is designed for under-sink installation or as a whole-house filter. Professional installation is recommended.

  1. Prepare the Installation Site: Choose a location that is easily accessible for filter changes, protected from freezing, and close to the main water line. Ensure there is enough clearance below the housing to remove the sump.
  2. Turn Off Water Supply: Locate your main water shut-off valve and turn off the water supply to your home. Open a nearby faucet to relieve pressure and drain the lines.
  3. Mount the Housing: Use the included mounting bracket (if applicable) to securely attach the filter housing to a sturdy surface, such as a wall stud or a reinforced cabinet panel. Ensure it is level.
  4. Connect Plumbing: Connect the inlet and outlet pipes to the corresponding ports on the filter housing. The NS900 features 1-inch I/O ports. Use appropriate plumbing fittings, thread sealant, or Teflon tape to ensure leak-free connections.
  5. Install Filter Cartridge: Unscrew the sump (bottom part) from the housing head. Insert the desired 10-inch filter cartridge into the sump, ensuring it is properly seated. Screw the sump back onto the housing head, hand-tightening it firmly. Do not overtighten.
  6. Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn on the main water supply. Check for leaks around all connections. If leaks occur, tighten connections as needed.
  7. Flush the System: Open a nearby cold water faucet and let the water run for several minutes to flush out any air or carbon fines (if using a carbon filter).

5. Operating Instructions

Once installed, the North Star NS900 Water Filtration Housing operates passively, filtering water as it flows through your plumbing system. No active user intervention is required during normal operation.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance, primarily filter cartridge replacement, is crucial for optimal performance and water quality.

6.1 Filter Cartridge Replacement

The frequency of filter replacement depends on water quality and usage. Typically, sediment filters are replaced every 3-6 months.

  1. Turn Off Water Supply: Shut off the main water supply to the filter housing.
  2. Relieve Pressure: Press the red pressure release button on top of the housing to relieve any built-up pressure. This makes unscrewing the sump easier.
  3. Unscrew Sump: Place a bucket underneath the housing to catch any residual water. Using a filter wrench (if necessary), unscrew the sump counter-clockwise.
  4. Remove Old Cartridge: Discard the old filter cartridge.
  5. Clean Housing: Rinse the inside of the sump with clean water. Inspect the O-ring for any cracks or damage. If damaged, replace it. Lubricate the O-ring with a small amount of food-grade silicone grease to ensure a good seal.
  6. Insert New Cartridge: Place a new, appropriate 10-inch filter cartridge into the sump, ensuring it is centered.
  7. Reassemble Housing: Screw the sump back onto the housing head clockwise. Hand-tighten firmly. Do not overtighten.
  8. Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn on the main water supply. Check for leaks.
  9. Flush System: Open a nearby cold water faucet and run water for several minutes to flush out air and any loose media from the new filter.
