3.3 Programming Your Cat's Microchip

The PetSafe Microchip Cat Door reads FDXB microchips. To program your cat's microchip:

  1. Insert batteries into the designated compartment.
  2. Press and hold the program button (refer to the quick start guide for exact location).
  3. Gently guide your cat through the door. The door will scan and register their microchip ID.
  4. Repeat for additional pets, up to 40.

For cats without a microchip, programmable collar keys are available separately.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 4-Way Manual Lock

The manual 4-way lock provides control over your cat's access. Adjust the slider at the bottom of the door to one of the following settings:

  • Locked: Prevents both entry and exit.
  • Unlocked: Allows both entry and exit for programmed pets.
  • Enter Only: Allows programmed pets to enter but not exit.
  • Exit Only: Allows programmed pets to exit but not enter.

4.2 Battery Indicator

The cat door is battery-powered. A low battery indicator will signal when it is time to replace the batteries. Ensure you replace all batteries simultaneously with new ones of the correct type (refer to specifications for battery type).

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the flap and the sensor area with a damp cloth to remove dirt, dust, or debris that may obstruct the sensor or flap movement. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator activates to ensure continuous operation.
  • Inspect Flap: Periodically check the flap for any damage or wear that might affect its sealing or movement.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Door Not Opening for Programmed Pet:
    • Check the 4-way lock setting to ensure it is not set to 'Locked' or 'Enter Only' when your cat is trying to exit.
    • Verify that the batteries are not low or depleted. Replace if necessary.
    • Ensure your cat's microchip is correctly programmed. Re-program if unsure.
    • Check for any obstructions around the sensor or flap that might prevent detection or movement.
  • Unwanted Animals Entering:
    • Confirm the 4-way lock is set to 'Locked' or 'Exit Only' if you want to prevent entry.
    • Ensure the door is properly installed and sealed to prevent animals from forcing their way in.
    • The microchip reader is designed to prevent entry by non-programmed animals. If an animal is still entering, ensure no other pets are programmed that should not have access.
  • Motion Sensor Issues (e.g., in bright sunlight):
    • In some environments, strong direct sunlight might interfere with the motion sensor's ability to detect a cat approaching. Ensure the cat fully enters the tunnel to block sufficient light for the sensor to activate the microchip reader.
    • Consider adding a small awning or cover above the exterior of the door to reduce direct sunlight if issues persist.
  • Flap Not Sealing Properly:
    • Check for debris or dirt around the magnetic latches or weather stripping. Clean as needed.
    • Inspect the flap for any damage or warping.
