Product Overview

Master Lock 5KA-A297 Laminated Padlock with two keys

Image 1: A Master Lock 5KA-A297 laminated padlock shown with two brass keys. The padlock features a silver body with black accents and a chrome shackle. The word "COMMERCIAL" is visible on the black band near the shackle, and "Master" is visible on the lower black band.

The Master Lock 5KA-A297 padlocks are a set of seven 2-inch wide laminated padlocks, all operating with the same key (keyed alike to key #A297). Each padlock features:

  • Durable Construction: Laminated steel bodies provide strength, complemented by a hardened boron alloy shackle for enhanced cut resistance.
  • Advanced Security: A 4-pin cylinder mechanism is designed to resist picking, and dual locking levers provide additional resistance against prying attempts.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Proprietary rustproofing is applied to extend the product's life, particularly in outdoor or damp environments.
  • Dimensions: Each padlock has a 2-inch (51mm) wide case, a 3/8-inch (10mm) shackle diameter, and a 1-inch (25mm) vertical shackle clearance. The horizontal shackle clearance measures 15/16 inch (24mm).
  • Key Compatibility: For key duplication, compatible key blanks include Master Lock Key Blank K1BOX or Ilco Blank M1.

Setup

The Master Lock 5KA-A297 padlocks are ready for immediate use upon receipt. No assembly is required.

  1. Unpack: Carefully remove all padlocks and keys from their packaging.
  2. Inspect: Verify that all seven padlocks and their corresponding keys are present and in good condition.
  3. Key Identification: Note that all keys provided will operate all padlocks in this set, as they are keyed alike to key #A297.
  4. Test Operation: Before deployment, insert a key into each padlock and test its locking and unlocking mechanism to ensure smooth operation.

Operating Instructions

To Unlock the Padlock:

  1. Insert one of the provided keys into the keyway located at the bottom of the padlock.
  2. Turn the key clockwise approximately a quarter turn (90 degrees).
  3. Pull the shackle upwards to release it from the padlock body.
  4. Remove the key by turning it counter-clockwise back to its original position and pulling it out. The shackle will remain open until locked again.

To Lock the Padlock:

  1. Ensure the shackle is in the open position.
  2. Align the shackle with the openings in the padlock body.
  3. Push the shackle firmly downwards into the padlock body until you hear a click. This sound indicates the padlock is securely locked.
  4. Gently pull on the shackle to confirm it is locked. No key is required to lock the padlock.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and reliable operation of your Master Lock padlocks.

  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of graphite lubricant or a silicone-based lubricant (avoid oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt and gum up the mechanism) into the keyway and around the shackle mechanism. This helps maintain smooth operation and prevents corrosion.
  • Cleaning: Keep the padlock clean from dirt, dust, and debris. Use a soft cloth to wipe down the body and shackle.
  • Storage: When not in use, store padlocks in a dry environment to further protect against moisture and rust.
  • Key Care: Keep keys clean and avoid bending or damaging them. Store spare keys in a secure, accessible location.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Key is difficult to insert or turn. Dirt or debris in keyway; lack of lubrication; bent key. Clean keyway with compressed air. Apply graphite or silicone lubricant. Inspect key for damage; use a different key if available.
Shackle is stiff or difficult to open/close. Corrosion or dirt in the shackle mechanism; lack of lubrication. Apply lubricant to the shackle entry points and work the shackle. Clean any visible debris.
Padlock does not lock when shackle is pushed down. Obstruction in the locking mechanism; shackle not fully aligned. Ensure shackle is properly aligned with the body holes. Check for any foreign objects preventing the shackle from fully engaging.
