3. Setup and Initial Inspection

Upon receiving your Benchmade Bugout 535, perform the following steps:

  1. Unpackaging: Carefully remove the knife from its packaging.
  2. Visual Inspection: Examine the knife for any signs of damage or manufacturing defects. Ensure the blade is securely seated when closed and that the handle components are intact.
  3. Blade Sharpness: The knife comes factory-sharp. Handle with extreme care.
  4. Pocket Clip Adjustment: The deep-carry pocket clip is reversible. If you wish to change its orientation, use a T6 Torx wrench to remove the screws, reposition the clip, and re-secure the screws. Do not overtighten.

4. Operating Instructions

The Bugout 535 features a manual-opening blade with the AXIS locking mechanism.

4.1 Opening the Blade

  1. Grip the handle firmly.
  2. Place your thumb on one of the ambidextrous thumb studs located on the blade.
  3. Apply outward pressure with your thumb to pivot the blade open until the AXIS lock engages with an audible click. Ensure the blade is fully locked before use.

4.2 Closing the Blade

  1. Ensure your fingers are clear of the blade path.
  2. Pull back on the AXIS lock bar (the small bar on the spine of the handle) with your thumb and forefinger.
  3. While holding the lock bar, gently pivot the blade closed until it is fully seated in the handle. Release the lock bar once the blade is safely closed.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your Benchmade Bugout 535.

5.1 Cleaning

  • Hand Wash Only: Clean the knife by hand with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Rinse Thoroughly: Ensure all soap residue is removed.
  • Dry Completely: Dry the knife immediately after washing to prevent corrosion, especially in the pivot area. Use a soft cloth.
  • Lubrication: Apply a small amount of high-quality knife lubricant to the pivot area periodically to maintain smooth action.

5.2 Sharpening

The CPM-S30V steel blade is designed for excellent edge retention. When sharpening is required, it is recommended to use appropriate sharpening tools or professional services to maintain the blade's integrity and factory edge angle.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Stiff or Gritty Pivot Action: New knives may exhibit a slightly stiff or gritty feel in the pivot. This can often be resolved by repeated opening and closing to wear in the mechanism. If persistent, the pivot screw (Torx T10) can be loosened by a very small increment (10-20 degrees) to allow freer movement. Adjust gradually until desired action is achieved, then ensure the screw is secure but not overtightened.
  • Loose Thumb Stud: If a thumb stud becomes loose, it can typically be re-secured with a small amount of threadlocker (non-permanent) and a T6 Torx wrench. If lost, contact Benchmade for a replacement.
  • Blade Play: If there is excessive side-to-side or up-and-down blade play when the knife is open, ensure the pivot screw is adequately tightened. If the issue persists, it may indicate wear on the AXIS lock components, and professional inspection is recommended.
