OneUp Components Composite Pedals Instruction Manual

Model: 1C0399BLK

1. Introduction

The OneUp Components Composite Pedals are designed for mountain biking, offering a balance of lightweight construction, durability, and grip. These flat pedals feature a large platform, replaceable pins, and a subtly convex shape to enhance foot stability and reduce pedal strikes. They are suitable for various riding conditions and also serve as a durable option for commuter city bikes.

Key features include a thin profile to minimize rock strikes, a large platform with 10 hexagonal pins per side for secure foot placement, and a lightweight design at 355g. The pedals are constructed from Nylon Composite with a Black Chromoly Steel axle and stainless steel pins.

2. Package Contents

Upon opening your OneUp Components Composite Pedals package, you should find the following items:

  • 1x Set of pedals (1x left pedal, 1x right pedal)
  • 20x Pre-installed pins on each pedal (10x pins per side, on both left and right pedals)

3. Installation Guide

The OneUp Components Composite Pedals are compatible with most cranksets, including carbon, aluminum, steel, and titanium. Installation can be performed using an 8mm hex key or a standard pedal wrench.

  1. Identify the left (L) and right (R) pedals. These are typically marked on the pedal spindle.
  2. Apply a small amount of grease to the pedal threads on both pedals.
  3. Thread the right pedal (R) into the right crank arm (clockwise to tighten).
  4. Thread the left pedal (L) into the left crank arm (counter-clockwise to tighten).
  5. Tighten both pedals securely using an 8mm hex key or pedal wrench. Do not overtighten.

4. Operating Instructions

The design of these pedals focuses on providing maximum grip and comfort for flat pedal riding. The large 115x105mm platform, combined with 10 hexagonal pins per side, ensures your feet remain planted even on challenging trails. The subtly convex shape allows the pedals to sit naturally in the arch of your foot, enhancing control and reducing the likelihood of pedal strikes.

For optimal performance, position your foot so the pedal's center aligns with the arch of your shoe. This maximizes contact with the pins and leverages the pedal's convex shape for a secure feel.

5. Maintenance and Care

One of the advantages of the OneUp Components Composite Pedals is their serviceability. These pedals can be serviced at home without requiring proprietary tools.

  • Pin Replacement: The rear-loading pins are designed for easy removal, even if they become damaged. Use an appropriate hex key to unscrew and replace individual pins as needed.
  • Bearing Service: The pedal features a steel axle and can be disassembled for bearing inspection and re-greasing. Refer to the cutaway image below for internal component visualization.
  • Cleaning: Regularly clean your pedals with water and a mild detergent to remove dirt and debris. Avoid high-pressure washing directly on the axle seals.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues with your pedals, consider the following common solutions:

  • Squeaking Noise: A common cause of squeaking can be friction where the pedal meets the crank arm. Applying a small amount of chain lube or appropriate grease to this interface can often resolve the issue.
  • Reduced Grip: If you notice a reduction in grip, inspect the pins for wear or damage. Replace any worn or broken pins to restore optimal traction.
  • Stiff Rotation: If the pedals feel stiff or do not spin freely, the internal bearings may require cleaning and re-greasing. Follow the maintenance steps for servicing the pedal axle.
