Setup

  1. Disassemble: Unscrew the upper chamber from the base. Remove the filter funnel from the base.
  2. Fill with Water: Fill the base (lower chamber) with cold water up to the level of the safety valve. Do not overfill, as this can affect brewing pressure and coffee quality.
  3. Add Coffee: Insert the filter funnel back into the base. Fill the filter funnel with finely ground coffee. Level the coffee gently without tamping or pressing it down.
  4. Assemble: Screw the upper chamber firmly onto the base, ensuring a tight seal. Avoid overtightening.

Operating Instructions

  1. Place on Heat: Place the assembled Moka Express on a stovetop burner. Use a medium heat setting. Ensure the flame does not extend beyond the base of the pot to prevent damage to the handle.
  2. Brewing Process: As the water in the base heats, pressure will build, forcing hot water up through the coffee grounds in the filter funnel and into the upper chamber.
  3. Monitor Brewing: Listen for a gurgling sound, which indicates that the coffee has finished brewing and the upper chamber is full.
  4. Remove from Heat: Immediately remove the Moka Express from the heat source once brewing is complete to prevent the coffee from burning or developing a bitter taste.
  5. Serve: Pour the freshly brewed espresso into cups and enjoy.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Proper cleaning and maintenance will extend the life of your Moka Express and ensure consistent coffee quality.

  • Cool Down: Always allow the Moka Express to cool completely before disassembling and cleaning.
  • Hand Wash Only: This product is not dishwasher safe. Wash all parts (upper chamber, filter funnel, base) with warm water and a soft sponge.
  • Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Do not use abrasive materials, harsh detergents, or steel wool, as these can damage the aluminum and affect the flavor of your coffee.
  • Rinse and Dry: Rinse all components thoroughly with clean water and dry them completely before reassembling or storing. This prevents water spots and corrosion.
  • Gasket and Filter: Periodically inspect the rubber gasket and filter plate for wear, cracks, or blockages. Replace these components if they show signs of damage or deterioration to maintain optimal brewing performance.

Troubleshooting

  • Coffee Not Brewing or Slow Brewing:
    • Check that the water level in the base is below the safety valve.
    • Ensure coffee grounds are not packed too tightly in the filter funnel.
    • Verify that the grind size is appropriate for Moka pots (medium-fine).
    • Confirm a tight seal between the upper and lower chambers.
  • Water Leaking from the Side:
    • Ensure the top and bottom chambers are screwed together firmly.
    • Check the rubber gasket for proper placement and signs of wear or damage. Replace if necessary.
  • Burnt or Bitter Taste:
    • Reduce the heat setting.
    • Remove the Moka Express from the heat immediately once brewing is complete (when gurgling starts).
    • Ensure the coffee grounds are fresh and stored correctly.
