4. Setup and Installation

The HEIMAN Mini Smoke Alarm Detector is designed for easy installation. Follow these steps to properly set up your device:

  1. Choose Location: Select an appropriate location for installation. Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home, inside each bedroom, and outside each sleeping area. Avoid placing them near windows, doors, or air vents where drafts might interfere with smoke detection.
  2. Mounting:
    • The package includes a screw and an anchor for mounting.
    • Mark the desired mounting spot on the ceiling or wall.
    • Drill a hole, insert the anchor, and then secure the mounting bracket (if separate) or the alarm itself with the provided screw.
    • Alternatively, the device may come with a strong adhesive pad for drill-free installation. Ensure the surface is clean and dry before applying.
  3. Battery Activation: The 10-year lithium battery (CR17335/CR123A) is pre-installed. The device is typically activated upon mounting or by removing a battery tab. Refer to the specific instructions on the device or packaging for activation.
  4. Test the Alarm: After installation, press and hold the test button on the alarm. The alarm should sound loudly (85dB) and the red LED should flash. This confirms the unit is functioning correctly.

Important: Do not paint the smoke alarm. Paint can clog the sensing chambers and prevent the alarm from operating correctly.

5. Operating Instructions

Once installed and activated, the HEIMAN Mini Smoke Alarm Detector operates continuously to monitor for smoke.

  • Normal Operation: The alarm will remain silent during normal operation. Some models may have a small LED that blinks periodically (e.g., every 30-60 seconds) to indicate it is powered and functioning.
  • Smoke Detection: When smoke is detected, the alarm will emit a loud, piercing sound (85dB) and the red LED will flash rapidly.
  • Alarm Silence/Hush Feature: If the alarm sounds due to non-emergency conditions (e.g., cooking fumes), you may be able to temporarily silence it by pressing the test/hush button. The alarm will then enter a temporary silence mode for a few minutes before resetting. If smoke is still present, the alarm will reactivate.
  • Low Battery Warning: When the battery is nearing the end of its life, the alarm will chirp periodically (e.g., every 30-60 seconds) to indicate a low battery. This warning will continue for approximately 30 days before the battery is fully depleted.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures your smoke alarm remains in optimal working condition.

  • Monthly Testing: Test your smoke alarm at least once a month by pressing and holding the test button until the alarm sounds. This confirms the electronics, battery, and horn are working.
  • Cleaning: Dust and debris can accumulate on the smoke alarm and affect its performance. Gently vacuum or wipe the exterior of the alarm with a soft, damp cloth at least once a year. Do not use cleaning sprays or solvents.
  • Battery Replacement: The HEIMAN Mini Smoke Alarm Detector features a 10-year sealed lithium battery that is not user-replaceable. When the low battery warning sounds (chirping), the entire unit should be replaced. Do not attempt to open the unit or replace the battery.
  • End of Life: After 10 years from the date of manufacture (or installation, if specified on the unit), the entire smoke alarm unit should be replaced, even if it appears to be working. The effectiveness of the sensor can degrade over time.
