Milescraft PocketBit 23070003 HSS Stepped Drill Bit Instruction Manual

Model: 23070003

Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the proper use and maintenance of the Milescraft PocketBit 23070003 HSS Stepped Drill Bit. The PocketBit is designed for creating pocket holes in various woodworking applications. It is constructed from high-speed steel to ensure durability and precision.

Included Components:

  • 3/8" Hex Shank Stepped Drill Bit
  • Allen Key
  • Depth Stop

Safety Information

Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses when operating power tools and using drill bits. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped before drilling. Keep hands clear of rotating parts. Disconnect power tools from the power source before changing accessories or performing maintenance.

Setup and Assembly

The Milescraft PocketBit is designed for use with pocket hole jigs that accept 3/8" bushings, such as the Milescraft PocketJig100, PocketJig200, and ConnectorKit.

Attaching the Depth Stop

  1. Slide the depth stop onto the stepped drill bit.
  2. Position the depth stop to achieve the desired drilling depth. The depth stop prevents the drill bit from penetrating too far into the workpiece.
  3. Use the included Allen key to tighten the set screw on the depth stop, securing it firmly in place on the drill bit. Ensure the depth stop is tight enough to prevent movement during drilling.

The design of the depth stop allows it to be placed anywhere on the bit without the set screw directly contacting the drill bit's flutes, preventing gouges.

Operating Instructions

Drilling Pocket Holes

  1. Insert the assembled PocketBit into your drill chuck. Ensure the drill bit is centered and securely tightened in the chuck.
  2. Place your pocket hole jig onto the workpiece and clamp it securely.
  3. Insert the tip of the PocketBit into the guide bushing of the pocket hole jig.
  4. Start the drill and slowly plunge the bit into the workpiece. Allow the bit to cut through the material.
  5. Once the depth stop contacts the jig, withdraw the drill bit from the workpiece.
  6. Clear any sawdust or debris from the pocket hole before inserting screws.

The stepped design of the drill bit is engineered to reduce clogging and create smooth, precise holes.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, remove any sawdust or debris from the drill bit and depth stop. A brush or compressed air can be used.
  • Sharpening: Over time, the drill bit may become dull. Sharpening services or specialized sharpening tools can restore the cutting edge.
  • Storage: Store the PocketBit in a dry environment to prevent rust. Keep it in its original packaging or a tool case to protect the cutting edges.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the drill bit for signs of wear, damage, or excessive dullness. Replace the bit if it is damaged or no longer performs effectively.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Drill bit becomes dull quickly.Overheating, drilling into hard materials without proper speed, or prolonged use.Reduce drilling speed, allow the bit to cool, or sharpen/replace the bit.
Excessive smoke or burning smell during drilling.Dull bit, too much pressure, or incorrect drill speed.Sharpen/replace bit, reduce pressure, adjust drill speed.
Depth stop slips during drilling.Set screw not tightened sufficiently.Ensure the set screw is securely tightened with the Allen key.
Holes are not clean or precise.Dull bit, improper drilling technique, or workpiece not secured.Sharpen/replace bit, use steady pressure, ensure workpiece is clamped.
