4. Product Overview

  1. LCD Display: Shows measurement readings, units, and function symbols.

5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

The DY4100 requires 6 x AA 1.5V batteries (UM3) for the main unit and 1 x 12V battery for internal circuitry (not included in the standard package). Ensure batteries are installed with correct polarity.

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the device.
  2. Open the battery cover.
  3. Insert the required batteries, observing the polarity markings.
  4. Close the battery cover securely.

5.2 Connecting Test Leads and Earth Rods for Earth Resistance Measurement

Proper connection of the test leads and auxiliary earth rods is crucial for accurate measurements. The setup involves a three-point measurement method.

  1. Positioning: Drive the two auxiliary earth rods into the ground in a straight line with the main earth electrode (the one you are testing). The rods should be equidistant from each other and from the main earth electrode, typically spaced 5 to 10 meters apart.
  2. Moistening the Ground: For optimal measurement, especially in dry conditions, it is recommended to moisten the ground around the auxiliary earth rods.
  3. Connecting Leads:
    • Connect the green test lead (shortest) to the E terminal on the tester and to the main earth electrode (the earthing bar or system you are testing).
    • Connect the yellow test lead to the P terminal on the tester and to the intermediate auxiliary earth rod.
    • Connect the red test lead to the C terminal on the tester and to the furthest auxiliary earth rod.
  4. Cable Routing: Ensure that the test leads do not cross each other to prevent electromagnetic interference that could affect the measurement accuracy.
  5. Circuit Isolation: Before connecting the tester for earth resistance measurement, ensure that the main earth connection to the electrical system is temporarily disconnected (e.g., by opening the earth bar) to isolate the earth electrode under test.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Powering On/Off

Rotate the Function Switch (10) from the "OFF" position to any desired measurement range to power on the device. To power off, rotate the switch back to "OFF".

6.2 Measuring Earth Voltage (AC)

Before measuring earth resistance, it is crucial to check for any AC voltage present on the earth electrode, as high voltage can affect accuracy or pose a safety risk.

  1. Rotate the Function Switch (10) to the "EARTH VOLTAGE" position.
  2. Connect the green test lead to the E terminal and the red test lead to the V terminal. Connect the other ends to the earth electrode and a neutral/phase point if measuring between them, or simply connect E and P/C terminals to the earth electrode and an auxiliary rod to check for stray voltages.
  3. Press and hold the Test Key (8). The LCD Display (1) will show the AC voltage reading.
  4. The measured voltage should ideally be below 3V. If it is higher, investigate the source of the voltage before proceeding with earth resistance measurements.
  5. Release the Test Key to stop the measurement.

6.3 Measuring Earth Resistance

Ensure the test leads and auxiliary earth rods are set up as described in Section 5.2.

  1. Rotate the Function Switch (10) to the appropriate earth resistance range (20Ω, 200Ω, or 2000Ω). Start with the highest range (2000Ω) if the expected resistance is unknown, then switch to a lower range for better resolution if the reading is significantly lower.
  2. Press and hold the Test Key (8). The green "OK Work Indicating Lamp" (6) should illuminate, and the LCD Display (1) will show the resistance reading.
  3. Keep the Test Key pressed until the reading on the display stabilizes. This may take a few seconds.
  4. Once the reading is stable, you can release the Test Key. The reading will remain on the display if the Data Lock function is active, or it will clear.
  5. Record the measurement.

6.4 Data Hold Function

To freeze the current reading on the display:

  • During a measurement, press the Data Lock Key (HOLD) (9). The "HOLD" symbol will appear on the LCD.
  • The displayed value will be held. Press the Data Lock Key again to release the hold function and return to live measurement or clear the display.

6.5 Low Battery Warning

When the battery voltage drops to a critical level, a low battery symbol will appear on the LCD Display (1). Replace all batteries promptly to ensure accurate measurements and proper device operation.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

To maintain the accuracy and longevity of your DY4100 tester:

  • Wipe the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Ensure the terminals are clean and free of dirt or corrosion.
  • Clean the auxiliary earth rods after each use to remove soil and debris.

7.2 Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator appears, replace all batteries as described in Section 5.1. Always use fresh batteries of the specified type.

7.3 Storage

When not in use for extended periods, store the DY4100 in its carrying bag in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries if storing for more than one month to prevent leakage.

8. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
No display or device does not power on. Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. Check battery polarity; replace with fresh batteries.
Unstable or fluctuating readings. Poor contact with earth rods; dry ground; electromagnetic interference. Ensure rods are firmly in ground; moisten ground; check lead connections; ensure leads do not cross. Hold the Test key until the reading stabilizes.
"OL" or over-range indication. Resistance value exceeds selected range. Switch to a higher resistance range (e.g., from 20Ω to 200Ω or 2000Ω).
Low battery indicator appears. Batteries are low. Replace all batteries immediately.
Inaccurate readings. Incorrect setup; external interference; dirty terminals. Review setup instructions; ensure leads are clean and connected properly; re-test in a different location if interference is suspected.
