Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of your AL-KO AK 161 Ball Coupling with Soft-Dock. Please read these instructions carefully before use to ensure proper function and safety. This coupling is designed for trailers up to 1600 kg and features a 50 mm round drawbar connection.
Safety Instructions
- Always ensure the coupling is correctly installed and securely fastened before towing.
- Regularly inspect the coupling for signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Do not use if damaged.
- Ensure the trailer's maximum permissible total weight does not exceed the coupling's capacity (1600 kg).
- Verify that the coupling ball is clean and free of grease or oil before coupling, unless specified by the ball manufacturer.
- Always use a safety chain or cable in conjunction with the coupling as required by local regulations.
- Consult a qualified professional for installation if you are unsure.
Setup and Installation
The AL-KO AK 161 ball coupling is designed for mounting on a 50 mm round drawbar. Proper installation is critical for safety and performance.

Image: AL-KO AK 161 Ball Coupling. This image shows the complete ball coupling unit, including the Soft-Dock handle and the mounting points for the drawbar.
- Prepare the Drawbar: Ensure the end of the trailer drawbar is clean and free from burrs. The drawbar must be a 50 mm round profile.
- Position the Coupling: Slide the AK 161 coupling onto the drawbar. Ensure the coupling is oriented correctly with the Soft-Dock handle facing upwards.
- Secure Mounting: The coupling features M12 horizontal mounting with a hole spacing of 47-54 mm, and M12 cross mounting with a hole spacing of 40 mm. Use appropriate high-strength M12 bolts, nuts, and washers (not included) to secure the coupling to the drawbar.
- Tighten Bolts: Tighten all bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque settings. Refer to the technical drawing or AL-KO's official documentation for precise torque values. Incorrect torque can lead to coupling failure.
- Final Check: After tightening, ensure there is no play between the coupling and the drawbar.
Operating Instructions
Coupling the Trailer
- Prepare Tow Vehicle: Position the tow vehicle so that the tow ball is aligned with the coupling.
- Open Coupling: Lift the Soft-Dock handle fully upwards until it locks in the open position.
- Lower onto Ball: Lower the trailer onto the tow ball. The coupling will automatically engage the ball.
- Verify Engagement: Ensure the handle drops down and locks into place. The green safety indicator (if present) should be visible, confirming a secure connection. Gently lift the trailer drawbar to confirm it is firmly attached to the tow ball.
- Connect Safety Chain: Attach the trailer's safety chain or cable to the tow vehicle.
Uncoupling the Trailer
- Park Safely: Ensure the tow vehicle and trailer are on level ground and the trailer's parking brake is engaged.
- Remove Safety Chain: Disconnect the safety chain or cable from the tow vehicle.
- Open Coupling: Lift the Soft-Dock handle fully upwards until it locks in the open position.
- Raise Trailer: Use the trailer's jockey wheel to raise the drawbar, lifting the coupling clear of the tow ball.
- Move Vehicle: Once clear, move the tow vehicle away from the trailer.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your AL-KO AK 161 coupling.
- Visual Inspection: Before each use, visually inspect the coupling for cracks, deformation, excessive wear, or corrosion. Pay close attention to the housing, handle mechanism, and mounting bolts.
- Lubrication: Periodically lubricate moving parts of the coupling mechanism with a suitable grease or spray, as recommended by AL-KO. Avoid lubricating the tow ball itself unless it is a specific type requiring it.
- Cleaning: Keep the coupling clean from dirt, mud, and road salt. Clean with water and a mild detergent, then dry thoroughly.
- Bolt Tightness: Check the tightness of the mounting bolts periodically, especially after the first few uses and after long journeys. Retighten to the specified torque if necessary.
- Soft-Dock Condition: Inspect the Soft-Dock handle for damage or deterioration. This component is designed to protect against scratches during coupling/uncoupling.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty coupling/uncoupling | Tow ball or coupling mechanism is dirty/corroded; mechanism is stiff; tow ball is not aligned. | Clean and lubricate the mechanism. Ensure proper alignment. Check for obstructions. |
| Coupling does not lock securely | Tow ball is worn or incorrect size; coupling mechanism is damaged; obstruction. | Inspect tow ball and coupling for wear/damage. Ensure no debris is preventing full engagement. If damaged, replace the coupling. |
| Excessive play when coupled | Worn tow ball or coupling components; incorrect tow ball size. | Inspect for wear. Replace worn components or the entire coupling if necessary. Ensure the tow ball meets standard specifications. |
