1. Introduction and Safety Information
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective installation, operation, and maintenance of your AL-KO Basic Type 900 Winch. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the winch and keep it for future reference. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury or damage to the equipment.
General Safety Warnings:
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection, when operating the winch.
- Never exceed the maximum rated load capacity of 900 kg. Overloading can cause winch failure and serious injury.
- Ensure the winch is securely mounted to a stable and appropriate structure before use.
- Inspect the winch, rope/strap, and all connections for wear, damage, or corrosion before each use. Do not use if any components are damaged.
- Keep hands and clothing clear of moving parts, especially the drum and gears, during operation.
- Do not allow children or untrained individuals to operate the winch.
- Avoid sudden jerking motions when operating the winch. Apply force smoothly and consistently.
- Never use the winch to lift or transport people.
- Ensure the load is properly secured before winching.
2. Setup and Installation
The AL-KO Basic Type 900 Winch is designed for secure mounting. It is supplied without rope or strap, allowing you to choose the appropriate pulling medium for your application.
Mounting the Winch:
- Select a mounting location that is structurally sound and capable of withstanding the maximum pulling force of the winch.
- Refer to the technical drawing for precise dimensions and mounting hole patterns.
- Use appropriate high-strength bolts, washers, and nuts to secure the winch firmly to the mounting surface. Ensure all fasteners are tightened to the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications (if available, otherwise ensure they are very tight and secure).
- Verify that the winch is level and aligned correctly with the intended pulling direction to prevent uneven wear on the rope/strap and internal components.
Attaching Rope or Strap:
- The winch drum is designed to accommodate a rope with a diameter of up to 7 mm or a towing strap up to 7 meters in length.
- Thread the end of your rope or strap through the designated attachment point on the winch drum.
- Securely fasten the rope/strap to the drum using a knot or attachment method recommended by the rope/strap manufacturer, ensuring it cannot slip under load.
- Wind the rope/strap onto the drum neatly and under slight tension, ensuring there are no overlaps or kinks. Leave at least 3-5 wraps on the drum at all times to prevent the rope/strap from detaching under full extension.

3. Operating Instructions
Operating the AL-KO Basic Type 900 Winch requires careful attention to safety and proper technique.
Engaging and Disengaging the Clutch:
The winch features an automatic clutch mechanism. To operate, ensure the clutch is engaged. The handle will turn the drum, winding or unwinding the rope/strap. To release the drum for free-spooling (if applicable and safe), consult the specific mechanism on your winch. Warning: Ensure the clutch mechanism is fully engaged before applying load. A partially engaged or faulty clutch can lead to sudden load release.
Winding the Rope/Strap (Hauling):
- Attach the hook or end of the rope/strap securely to the object you wish to move.
- Ensure the path of the load is clear and that no personnel are in the line of fire.
- Insert the crank handle onto the drive shaft.
- Turn the crank handle clockwise to wind the rope/strap onto the drum, pulling the load. Apply steady, even force. The manual force required is approximately 190 N.
- Maintain tension on the rope/strap at all times to prevent tangling or loosening on the drum.
Unwinding the Rope/Strap (Lowering/Releasing):
- To unwind the rope/strap, turn the crank handle counter-clockwise. The automatic brake mechanism will control the descent of the load.
- Always maintain control of the crank handle. Do not release it abruptly under load.
- If your winch has a free-spool function, only use it when there is no load on the rope/strap.

4. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your AL-KO Basic Type 900 Winch.
- Inspection: Before each use, visually inspect the winch for any signs of damage, wear, corrosion, or loose fasteners. Pay close attention to the gears, drum, handle, and mounting points. Check the rope/strap for fraying, cuts, or kinks.
- Lubrication: Periodically lubricate all moving parts, especially the gears and bearings, with a suitable grease or lubricant. This reduces friction and prevents corrosion.
- Cleaning: Keep the winch clean and free from dirt, debris, and moisture. After use, especially in harsh environments, clean the winch thoroughly and dry it before storage.
- Storage: Store the winch in a dry, protected area when not in use to prevent rust and environmental damage.
- Rope/Strap Replacement: Replace worn or damaged ropes/straps immediately. Ensure replacement ropes/straps meet the specified diameter and strength requirements.
