1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, setup, and maintenance of your Holzmann ED300ECO metal lathe. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the machine to ensure proper use and to prevent injury or damage.
The Holzmann ED300ECO is a compact metal lathe designed for precision turning tasks. It features a lead screw for thread cutting and automatic longitudinal feed, inductively hardened and ground prismatic bed guides, and a hardened main spindle with adjustable tapered roller bearings for high concentricity.

2. Safety Instructions
Always prioritize safety when operating machinery. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or damage to the equipment.
2.1 General Safety Precautions
- Read and understand the entire manual before operation.
- Ensure the machine is properly grounded.
- Keep the work area clean and well-lit.
- Do not operate the machine under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication.
- Keep children and unauthorized persons away from the machine.
- Disconnect power before performing any maintenance, adjustments, or cleaning.
- Securely fasten all workpieces in the chuck or collet.
- Never leave the machine running unattended.
2.2 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Always wear appropriate PPE when operating the lathe:
- Eye Protection: Safety glasses or a face shield to protect against flying chips and debris.
- Hand Protection: Gloves (only when not operating rotating parts) for handling sharp workpieces or tools. Remove gloves before operating the machine.
- Foot Protection: Safety shoes to protect against falling objects.
- Hearing Protection: Earplugs or earmuffs, especially during prolonged operation.
- Respiratory Protection: A dust mask if generating fine dust.

Figure 2: Control panel and specification label. This image shows the main control panel with power switch, speed control knob, direction switch (L/0/R), and various safety symbols indicating the need for eye, hand, and hearing protection. The label also displays model ED300ECO, voltage (230V 50Hz), power (400W), weight (38kg), and spindle bore (20mm).
3. Setup
3.1 Unpacking and Placement
- Carefully remove the lathe from its packaging. Retain packaging for future transport if needed.
- Place the lathe on a sturdy, level workbench capable of supporting its weight (approximately 48 kg gross, 40 kg net).
- Ensure adequate clearance around the machine for safe operation and maintenance.
- Secure the lathe to the workbench to prevent movement during operation.
3.2 Electrical Connection
- The Holzmann ED300ECO operates on a 230 V, 50 Hz power supply.
- Connect the machine to a properly grounded electrical outlet.
- Ensure the power cord is not damaged and is routed safely to avoid tripping hazards.
3.3 Initial Checks
- Inspect the machine for any visible damage from shipping.
- Verify that all moving parts operate smoothly without obstruction.
- Check that all fasteners are tight.
- Remove any protective coatings or packing materials from the bed and other precision surfaces.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Control Panel Overview
Refer to Figure 2 for the layout of the control panel. Key controls include:
- Power Switch: Main on/off switch.
- Speed Control Knob: Adjusts spindle speed (50-2500 min-1).
- Direction Switch (L/0/R): Selects spindle rotation direction (Left/Off/Right).
- Emergency Stop Button: Immediately cuts power to the machine.
4.2 Workpiece Mounting
The lathe is equipped with a chuck for holding workpieces.

Figure 3: Close-up of the three-jaw chuck. This image shows the chuck jaws in an open position, ready to secure a cylindrical workpiece. Ensure the workpiece is centered and tightly clamped before operation.
- Ensure the chuck jaws are clean and free of debris.
- Insert the workpiece and tighten the chuck jaws securely using the chuck key. Remove the chuck key immediately after tightening.
- For longer workpieces, use the tailstock for additional support.
4.3 Tool Holder and Tooling
- Mount turning tools securely in the tool post.
- Ensure the cutting edge of the tool is aligned with the center height of the workpiece.
- The maximum tool holder capacity is 8 mm.
4.4 Speed and Feed Control
The spindle speed is continuously variable from 50 to 2500 min-1 via the control knob. Adjust the speed according to the material being machined and the cutting tool used.

Figure 4: Close-up of the cross slide and feed mechanism. This image highlights the handwheel for cross-feed, the graduated dial for precise adjustments, and the lever for engaging the automatic longitudinal feed. The "16T" label likely refers to a gear setting for specific operations.
- Automatic Longitudinal Feed: Engage the lead screw for automatic longitudinal turning.
- Thread Cutting: The lathe supports metric threads from 0.5 to 2.5 mm/r. Use the standard included metal change gears to set the desired thread pitch. Refer to the machine's gear chart for specific configurations.
- Cross Slide and Compound Slide: Use the handwheels for manual control of the cross-feed (70 mm travel) and compound slide (70 mm travel). The tailstock can be offset for taper turning.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your lathe. Always disconnect the machine from the power supply before performing any maintenance.
5.1 Cleaning
- After each use, clean chips and debris from the machine bed, carriage, and chuck using a brush or shop vacuum.
- Wipe down all surfaces with a clean cloth. Avoid using harsh solvents that could damage painted surfaces or plastic components.
5.2 Lubrication
- Regularly lubricate the lead screw, cross slide screw, and bed ways with appropriate machine oil.
- Check and replenish gearbox oil if applicable (refer to specific instructions on the machine or a more detailed manual if provided by Holzmann).
5.3 Inspection and Adjustment
- Periodically check for wear on moving parts, especially the chuck jaws, tool post, and lead screw.
- Ensure all belts (if any) are properly tensioned.
- Verify the concentricity of the main spindle and adjust tapered roller bearings if necessary (this is an advanced procedure and may require professional assistance).
6. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter. For problems not listed here, contact Holzmann customer support.
