Setup

Follow these steps to set up your game of Bärenpark:

  1. Prepare the Supply Board: Place the Supply Board in the center of the playing area, accessible to all players.
  2. Sort Tiles: Separate the Green Area, Enclosure, Animal House, and Bear Statue tiles by type and stack them face-up on their designated spaces on the Supply Board. Ensure the tiles are sorted by their point values (if applicable) or size, as indicated on the board.
  3. Player Park Areas: Each player takes one starting Park Area tile. This is their personal building space.
  4. Achievement Tiles: Shuffle the Achievement tiles and place them face-down in a stack near the Supply Board. Draw a specified number of Achievement tiles (e.g., 3 for a standard game) and place them face-up, visible to all players.
  5. First Player: Determine the first player by any agreed-upon method (e.g., the player who last visited a zoo).

Operating (Gameplay)

Bärenpark is played over a series of turns until a player completes their fourth Park Area tile. The game then concludes, and scores are tallied.

Player Turn Sequence:

  1. Place a Tile: Choose one tile from your personal supply and place it onto one of your Park Area tiles.
    • Tiles must be placed entirely within the boundaries of your Park Area tiles.
    • Tiles cannot overlap other tiles or empty spaces.
    • You may rotate tiles freely before placing them.
  2. Collect New Tiles: After placing a tile, check if it covers any icons on your Park Area tile. For each icon covered, take one corresponding tile from the Supply Board.
    • Green Area Icon: Take any one Green Area tile.
    • Enclosure Icon: Take any one Enclosure tile.
    • Animal House Icon: Take any one Animal House tile.
    • Bear Statue Icon: Take any one Bear Statue.
    • Place collected tiles into your personal supply.
  3. Add New Park Area (Optional): If you completely fill a Park Area tile with other tiles, you immediately take a new, empty Park Area tile from the supply and add it to your park. Your park can expand up to four Park Area tiles.

End of Game:

The game ends immediately when any player places a tile that completes their fourth Park Area tile. All other players get one final turn.

Scoring:

Players calculate their final score by summing the points from:

The player with the highest total score wins. In case of a tie, the player with the most Bear Statues wins. If still tied, the player with the most Animal Houses wins.

Advanced Play (Achievements)

For players seeking an additional challenge, Bärenpark includes Achievement tiles. These tiles provide specific objectives that, if met by the end of the game, award bonus points. Examples include having a certain number of specific animal houses, completing a row or column of your park, or collecting a set of different bear types.

Integrating Achievements adds another layer of strategic planning, encouraging players to adapt their tile placement to fulfill these conditions while still optimizing for general scoring.
