1. Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and efficient operation of your KERN PCD 6K-4 Precision Laboratory Balance. This laboratory scale features a separate weighing platform, making it ideal for use in specialized environments such as glove-bags or extractor cabinets, particularly when weighing toxic, volatile, or contaminated substances. It includes a PRE-TARE function for manual extraction of known container weights, useful for precise filling quantity controls.
Please read this manual thoroughly before initial use and keep it for future reference.
2. Safety Instructions
- Always operate the balance on a stable, level surface free from vibrations.
- Avoid exposing the balance to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or high humidity.
- Do not overload the balance beyond its maximum capacity of 6000g.
- Keep the balance clean and free from dust and chemical spills.
- Use only the power adapter supplied with the device.
- Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the balance yourself. Refer to qualified service personnel.

Figure 1: KERN PCD 6K-4 Precision Laboratory Balance
This image shows the KERN PCD 6K-4 precision laboratory balance. It consists of a square weighing platform with a stainless steel surface, connected by a cable to a separate digital display unit. The display unit features a large digital readout, along with buttons for ON/OFF, MODE/CAL, SET/M, PRINT, and TARE. The display indicates a maximum capacity of 3500g and a readability of 0.01g, though the model is 6K-4 (6000g max). The separate design is ideal for use in specialized environments like glove-bags.
4. Setup
- Placement: Place the weighing platform and display unit on a stable, vibration-free, and level surface. Ensure sufficient space for operation and avoid direct sunlight, drafts, or significant temperature fluctuations.
- Assembly: Connect the cable from the weighing platform to the designated port on the digital display unit.
- Leveling: Use the adjustable foot bolts located on the underside of the weighing platform to level the balance. Observe the integrated spirit level (if present) to ensure precise horizontal alignment.
- Wind Protection: If your model includes a wind protection ring (for Ø 105 mm weighing plates), carefully place it around the weighing platform. This helps stabilize readings in environments with air currents.
- Power Connection: Connect the power adapter to the display unit and then plug it into a suitable power outlet.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Power On/Off
- To turn the balance ON, press the ON/OFF button. The display will show a self-test and then settle at 0.00g.
- To turn the balance OFF, press and hold the ON/OFF button until the display turns off.
5.2 Basic Weighing
- Ensure the balance is powered on and displays 0.00g.
- Carefully place the item to be weighed onto the center of the weighing platform.
- Wait for the display to stabilize. The stable weight will be shown.
- Remove the item from the platform.
5.3 TARE Function
The TARE function allows you to subtract the weight of a container, so only the net weight of the contents is displayed.
- Place the empty container onto the weighing platform. The display will show its weight.
- Press the TARE button. The display will reset to 0.00g.
- Add the substance to be weighed into the container. The display will show the net weight of the substance.
The balance also features a PRE-TARE function for manual entry of a known container weight. Consult the full manual for detailed instructions on using PRE-TARE, typically accessed via the MODE/CAL or SET/M button in specific modes.
5.4 Unit Selection / Mode
Press the MODE/CAL button to cycle through available weighing units (e.g., grams, kilograms, pounds, ounces) or to enter different operating modes. Refer to the full manual for a list of supported units and mode functions.
5.5 Calibration
Regular calibration ensures the accuracy of your balance. Calibration should be performed using certified calibration weights.
- Ensure the balance is stable and free from any load.
- Press and hold the MODE/CAL button until "CAL" appears on the display.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to place the required calibration weight(s) onto the platform.
- Once calibration is complete, the balance will return to weighing mode.
Note: Specific calibration procedures may vary. Always consult the detailed instructions provided with your balance for precise steps and recommended calibration weights.
5.6 Print Function
If your balance is connected to a compatible printer or data interface, pressing the PRINT button will send the current weighing data to the connected device.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Disconnect the power before cleaning. Use a soft, damp cloth with a mild detergent to clean the weighing platform and display unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure no liquid enters the device.
- Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the balance in a clean, dry, and stable environment. Use the provided safety cover to protect it from dust.
- Inspection: Regularly inspect the power cable and connections for any signs of damage.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Display does not turn on. | No power supply; faulty power adapter. | Check power connection; ensure adapter is functional. |
| Unstable readings. | Vibrations; drafts; uneven surface; electromagnetic interference. | Place on stable surface; use wind protection; level the balance; move away from interfering devices. |
| Incorrect weight displayed. | Balance not calibrated; object placed off-center; overload. | Perform calibration; place object centrally; ensure weight is within capacity. |
| "Err" or other error message. | Overload; internal error. | Remove load; restart balance. If error persists, contact support. |
