Setup
Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment on the handle of the thermometer (refer to Figure 4).
- Gently open the battery cover.
- Insert the required batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-). The device typically uses 9V batteries.
- Close the battery cover securely.
Powering On/Off
- To power on, simply press the measurement trigger. The device will automatically power off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery.
Operating Instructions
Taking a Measurement
- Hold the thermometer by the handle and point the infrared sensor towards the target object.
- Press and hold the measurement trigger. The laser pointer will activate to help aim at the desired measurement spot.
- The temperature reading will be displayed on the LCD screen instantly.
- Release the trigger to hold the reading on the display. The "HOLD" icon will appear.
Changing Temperature Units (Celsius/Fahrenheit)
- While the device is on, press the "C/F" button located below the display to toggle between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).
Backlight and Laser Control
- Press the light bulb icon button to turn the LCD backlight on or off.
- The laser pointer typically activates automatically when the trigger is pressed.
Distance to Spot Ratio (D:S)
The GM-550 has a D:S ratio of 12:1. This means that at a distance of 12 units from the target, the measurement spot diameter will be 1 unit. For accurate readings, ensure the target area is larger than the spot size.
Example: At 12 inches distance, the measurement spot is 1 inch in diameter. At 12 feet distance, the measurement spot is 1 foot in diameter.
Emissivity
The GM-550 has a fixed emissivity of 0.95. This value is suitable for most organic materials, painted surfaces, and many non-metallic surfaces. For highly reflective surfaces (e.g., polished metals), readings may be less accurate.
Maintenance
Cleaning the Device
- Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the casing. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- For the lens, use a soft cloth or cotton swab with a small amount of optical lens cleaner. Avoid touching the lens directly.
Battery Replacement
- When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries promptly to ensure accurate readings.
- Follow the battery installation steps outlined in the "Setup" section.
Storage
- Store the device in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- Remove batteries if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
