Setup

1. Attaching the T-Mount Adapter:

  1. Locate the T-Mount adapter ring provided.
  2. Align the red dot on the T-Mount adapter with the red dot on your Canon EOS camera body.
  3. Rotate the adapter clockwise until it clicks into place, securing it to the camera body.

2. Attaching the Lens:

  1. Remove the rear lens cap from the 500mm lens.
  2. Screw the rear thread of the 500mm lens into the T-Mount adapter on your camera body. Turn clockwise until it is firmly attached.
  3. If using the 2x teleconverter, first screw the 2x teleconverter onto the rear of the 500mm lens, then attach the combined unit to the T-Mount adapter. This will extend the focal length to 1000mm.

3. Mounting on a Tripod:

Due to its significant focal length and weight, using this lens handheld is not recommended. Always mount the lens on a sturdy tripod using the integrated tripod collar for stability and sharp images.

  1. Loosen the knob on the tripod collar to rotate the lens for optimal camera orientation (landscape or portrait).
  2. Attach the tripod collar's foot to your tripod's quick-release plate or directly to the tripod head.
  3. Tighten the tripod collar knob to secure the lens in position.

Operating Instructions

1. Camera Settings:

Since this is a manual focus lens with a fixed aperture, you will need to set your Canon EOS Rebel T5 camera to Manual (M) mode or Aperture Priority (Av) mode. In Manual mode, you control both shutter speed and ISO. In Aperture Priority mode, the camera will automatically select the shutter speed based on your ISO setting and the lens's fixed aperture.

  • Enable 'Shoot without lens': Some Canon cameras require this setting to be enabled when using third-party manual lenses. Refer to your camera's manual for specific instructions.

2. Focusing:

This lens features manual focus only. Precision focusing is critical for sharp images, especially at 1000mm focal length.

  1. Look through your camera's viewfinder or use Live View on the LCD screen.
  2. Rotate the knurled focus ring on the lens until your subject appears sharp.
  3. For critical focus, especially with Live View, zoom in on your subject on the LCD screen to achieve maximum sharpness.

3. Exposure:

As the lens has a fixed aperture, exposure control is managed through your camera's shutter speed and ISO settings.

  • Shutter Speed: Adjust the shutter speed to control the amount of light reaching the sensor. For telephoto lenses, a faster shutter speed is often necessary to prevent camera shake, even on a tripod. A general rule of thumb is to use a shutter speed of at least 1/1000th of a second for a 1000mm lens, or faster if possible.
  • ISO: Increase ISO sensitivity in low light conditions, but be mindful of increased digital noise at higher ISOs.
  • Metering: Use your camera's built-in light meter to guide your exposure settings.

4. Using Filters:

The lens accepts 67mm filters. Simply screw the filter onto the front filter thread of the lens.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Lens:

  • Dust: Use a blower brush to remove loose dust particles from the lens surfaces. Avoid wiping dry lens elements as this can cause scratches.
  • Smudges/Fingerprints: Apply a small amount of lens cleaning solution to a clean microfiber lens cloth. Gently wipe the lens surface in a circular motion from the center outwards.
  • Body: Wipe the lens barrel with a soft, dry cloth.

Storage:

  • Always attach front and rear lens caps when not in use.
  • Store the lens in its protective case in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and chemicals.
  • If storing for extended periods, consider using desiccant packets to prevent mold and mildew.

Troubleshooting

Images are blurry/out of focus:

  • Check Focus: Ensure you have manually focused accurately. Use Live View with magnification for precise focusing.
  • Camera Shake: At 1000mm, even slight camera movement can cause blur. Ensure the lens is securely mounted on a sturdy tripod. Use a remote shutter release or the camera's self-timer to minimize vibration.
  • Shutter Speed: Use a sufficiently fast shutter speed (e.g., 1/1000s or faster) to freeze motion and minimize shake.

Images are too dark or too bright:

  • Exposure Settings: Adjust your camera's shutter speed and ISO settings to achieve correct exposure.
  • Metering Mode: Experiment with different metering modes on your camera to see which works best for your lighting conditions.

Lens not recognized by camera:

  • 'Shoot without lens' Setting: Ensure your camera's menu setting for 'Shoot without lens' or similar is enabled.
  • Secure Connection: Verify that the T-Mount adapter and lens are securely attached to the camera body.
