Operating

This section covers the basic operation of your Swann DVR.

Live View:

After setup, the DVR will display the live view from all connected cameras on your monitor. You can switch between single-camera view, multi-camera view, and sequence view using the on-screen menu or mouse controls.

Recording:

  • Continuous Recording: The DVR is configured to record continuously by default. The 500GB HDD allows for extended recording periods.
  • Motion Detection Recording: You can configure specific channels to record only when motion is detected. This saves hard drive space and extends recording duration. Access this setting in the DVR's menu under "Record" > "Motion Detection".
  • Scheduled Recording: Set specific times for recording on each channel via the "Record" > "Schedule" menu.

Playback:

To review recorded footage:

  1. From the live view, right-click with the mouse to bring up the main menu.
  2. Select "Playback".
  3. Choose the date and time range you wish to review.
  4. Select the camera channel(s) for playback.
  5. Use the playback controls (play, pause, fast forward, rewind) to navigate through the footage.
  6. Smart Search: Utilize the Smart Search feature to quickly locate specific events (e.g., motion) within recorded footage. This is accessible within the playback interface.

Remote Access (SwannLink P2P):

The SwannLink Peer-to-Peer (P2P) feature allows for easy remote viewing on your smartphone or tablet. Ensure your DVR is connected to the internet.

  1. Download the SwannView Link app from your device's app store.
  2. Open the app and follow the instructions to add your DVR using its unique QR code or device ID.
  3. Once added, you can view live footage, playback recordings, and receive push notifications from anywhere with an internet connection.

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your DVR.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the DVR with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust and debris.

  • Hard Drive Health: The DVR's hard drive is critical for recording. While designed for continuous operation, it's good practice to monitor its health through the DVR's system information menu if available.
  • Password Security: Regularly change your DVR's password to a strong, unique combination of characters to prevent unauthorized access.

Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your DVR.

No Video Output:

  • Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to the DVR and a working power outlet.
  • Verify that the HDMI or VGA cable is securely connected to both the DVR and the monitor/TV.
  • Check if the monitor/TV is set to the correct input source (HDMI1, VGA, etc.).
  • Try connecting to a different monitor or using a different cable to rule out display or cable issues.

No Camera Image:

  • Ensure the camera is properly powered and its cable is securely connected to the DVR's "Video In" port.
  • Check the camera's power supply.
  • If using multiple cameras, try swapping the camera to a different DVR input to determine if the issue is with the camera or the DVR channel.

Cannot Access DVR Remotely:

  • Verify the DVR is connected to your router via an Ethernet cable and the LAN indicator light on the DVR is active.
  • Ensure your router has an active internet connection.
  • Check the network settings on the DVR (Main Menu > Network) to ensure it has obtained an IP address.
  • Confirm that the SwannView Link app is correctly configured with the DVR's details (QR code/device ID).
  • If your network uses a firewall, ensure the necessary ports are open (refer to Swann support for specific port requirements).

No Recording:

  • Check the hard drive status in the DVR's system information. Ensure it is detected and healthy.
  • Verify that recording schedules are correctly set up for the desired channels.
  • Ensure the hard drive is not full. If it is, the DVR may be set to overwrite old footage, or it may stop recording if overwrite is disabled.
