5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Power On/Off
Rotate the function selector dial from the 'OFF' position to any desired measurement function to power on the meter. To power off, rotate the dial back to 'OFF'. The meter also features an auto power-off function to conserve battery life after a period of inactivity.
5.2 Insulation Resistance Test
The PM5205 offers various test voltages for insulation resistance measurements.
- Connect the red test lead to the 'HIVΩ' terminal and the black test lead to the 'LOW' terminal.
- Rotate the function selector to the desired insulation test voltage (e.g., 250V, 500V, 1000V, 2500V).
- Connect the test leads to the circuit under test. Ensure the circuit is de-energized and isolated before connecting.
- Press the 'MEASURE' button to start the test. The display will show the insulation resistance value.
- For continuous testing, press the 'LOCK' button before 'MEASURE'. Press 'LOCK' again to release.
- The meter will automatically discharge the capacitive load after the test.
Note: If the resistance is beyond the meter's range, the display will show 'OL' (Overload).

Figure 5.1: The meter's display indicating 'OL', signifying an overload or out-of-range measurement.
5.2.1 PI and DAR Calculation
The meter can automatically calculate Polarization Index (PI) and Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR). Refer to the on-screen prompts or specific button functions for initiating these tests, typically involving timed insulation measurements.
5.2.2 Timer Function
Use the 'TIMER' button to set a specific duration for insulation tests, which is useful for PI and DAR calculations or for observing resistance over time.
5.3 DC Voltage Test
- Connect the red test lead to the 'V' terminal and the black test lead to the 'COM' terminal.
- Rotate the function selector to 'DCV'.
- Connect the test leads across the DC voltage source to be measured.
- Read the voltage value on the display.
5.4 AC Voltage Test
- Connect the red test lead to the 'V' terminal and the black test lead to the 'COM' terminal.
- Rotate the function selector to 'ACV'.
- Connect the test leads across the AC voltage source to be measured.
- Read the voltage value on the display.
5.5 Continuity Test
- Connect the red test lead to the 'V' terminal and the black test lead to the 'COM' terminal.
- Rotate the function selector to the continuity symbol (usually a speaker icon).
- Touch the test probes across the circuit or component to be tested.
- An audible beep indicates continuity (low resistance). The display will show the resistance value.
5.6 Store / Load Function
The PM5205 allows you to store measurement data and recall it later. Use the 'MEMO' and 'READ/A' buttons in conjunction with 'ENTER' or 'SELECT' to manage stored data. Refer to the specific button labels on your device for exact operation.
5.7 Compare Function
The 'COMP' button enables a comparison function, allowing you to set a reference value and quickly determine if subsequent measurements are above or below this threshold, often indicated by visual or audible alerts.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
To clean the meter, wipe the case with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the meter is powered off and disconnected from all circuits before cleaning.
6.2 Battery Replacement
Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Refer to Section 4.2 for battery installation instructions.
6.3 Storage
If the meter is not used for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and store the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your PM5205, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- Meter does not power on: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are not depleted. Replace if necessary.
- 'OL' displayed during measurement: The measured value is outside the selected range or the maximum capability of the meter. Select a higher range or verify the circuit conditions.
- Inaccurate readings: Ensure test leads are properly connected and not damaged. Verify the correct function and range are selected. Check for external interference.
- No continuity beep: Check if the circuit has high resistance or is open. Ensure the continuity function is selected.
