5. Operating the Mixer

This section outlines the basic operation of the MIDAS DM12 mixer.

5.1. Powering On/Off

  1. Before powering on, ensure all channel faders and the main mix fader are at their lowest setting.
  2. Turn on any connected source devices (microphones, instruments).
  3. Flip the power switch on the rear panel to the ON position.
  4. Turn on your power amplifiers or powered speakers last.
  5. To power off, reverse the sequence: turn off amplifiers/powered speakers first, then the mixer, then source devices.

5.2. Channel Operation

  • Gain Control: Adjust the GAIN knob for each channel to achieve an optimal input level. The PEAK LED should flash only occasionally.
  • Equalization (EQ): Use the TREBLE, MID (with FREQ sweep), and BASS knobs to shape the tone of each channel.
  • Aux Sends: Adjust the AUX 1 and AUX 2 knobs to send a portion of the channel signal to the auxiliary outputs. Use the PRE/POST switches in the master section to determine if the aux send is affected by the channel fader (POST) or not (PRE).
  • Pan/Balance: Use the PAN knob (mono channels) or BAL knob (stereo channels) to position the signal within the stereo field.
  • Mute: Press the MUTE button to silence a channel.
  • PFL (Pre-Fader Listen): Press the PFL button to monitor the channel's signal before the fader, typically through headphones.
  • Channel Fader: Adjust the channel fader to control the level of the signal sent to the main mix.

5.3. Master Controls

  • Main Mix Fader: Controls the overall output level of the main stereo mix.
  • Aux Masters: Adjust the AUX 1 and AUX 2 master knobs to control the overall level of the auxiliary sends.
  • Monitor/Phones: Adjust the MONITOR and PHONES level knobs to control the output level to your monitor speakers and headphones, respectively.
  • 2-Track Level: Controls the playback level of the 2-track input.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps prolong the life and performance of your DM12 mixer.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the mixer. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Dust: Keep the mixer free from dust. Use a soft brush or compressed air to clean around knobs and faders.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the mixer in a cool, dry place, preferably covered to protect it from dust.
  • Fuses: If the mixer does not power on, check the fuse located near the power inlet on the rear panel. Replace with a fuse of the same type and rating (T 1.6 A H 250V).

7. Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter.

  • No Sound Output:
    • Check all power connections and ensure the mixer is turned on.
    • Verify that the main mix fader and individual channel faders are raised.
    • Ensure no MUTE buttons are engaged on channels or master outputs.
    • Check connections to your power amplifier or powered speakers.
    • Confirm input sources are active and connected correctly.
  • No Signal from a Specific Channel:
    • Check the input cable connection for that channel.
    • Adjust the channel's GAIN knob.
    • Ensure the channel's MUTE button is not engaged.
    • If using a condenser microphone, verify +48V phantom power is active.
  • Hum or Noise:
    • Ensure all equipment is properly grounded.
    • Check for faulty cables or connections.
    • Reduce gain levels if distortion occurs.
    • Separate audio cables from power cables to minimize interference.
  • Distorted Sound:
    • Reduce the GAIN on the input channel.
    • Check that the PEAK LED on the channel is not constantly lit.
    • Lower the main mix fader or the input level to your amplifier.
