Important Safety Warnings

  • Always ensure baby's airway is clear and visible. Baby's chin should not be resting on their chest.
  • Regularly check all buckles, straps, and adjustments to ensure they are securely fastened before and during use.
  • Ensure baby is positioned ergonomically in an M-shape position, with knees higher than their bottom, to support healthy hip development. The Ergobaby Adapt is acknowledged as hip healthy by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute.
  • Never use the carrier during activities that could be dangerous for your baby, such as cooking, driving, or strenuous exercise.
  • For newborns (7-12 lbs), ensure the carrier is adjusted to the narrowest seat setting and the neck cushion is folded inward for proper head and neck support.
  • Always support baby's head and neck when placing them into or taking them out of the carrier.

Setup and Adjustments

The Ergobaby Adapt carrier is designed to adjust to your growing baby. Follow these steps to ensure a proper and comfortable fit.

1. Adapt the Seat to Baby's Height

The carrier's bucket seat adjusts to your baby's size. Refer to the color-coded lines on the waistbelt Velcro for guidance:

  • Newborn (min. 7 lbs / 3.2 kg and 20 in / 50.8 cm): Attach the tabs on the Velcro following the red lines for the narrowest setting.
  • Around 3 months old (approx. 24 in / 61 cm): Move the tabs to the medium setting, following the yellow lines.
  • Around 9 months old (approx. 28 in / 71 cm): Attach along the blue lines for the widest setting.

2. Adjust Front Straps for Thigh Support

To ensure your baby's thighs are fully supported in an ergonomic M-shape position (knees higher than bottom), adjust the two front straps. Start with the straps fully pulled and gradually release them to the medium, then the widest snap setting, as needed for your baby's size.

3. Position the Neck Cushion for Head Support

  • For newborns (younger than 6 weeks): Fold the neck cushion inward and button it from the side to the lower buttons for tighter support. This provides essential head and neck support for infants without strong head control.
  • For babies 6 weeks and older (with some head control): You can fold and button the neck cushion on the outside. Ensure baby's head is supported at mid-ear level.
  • For babies 7 weeks and older (when extra support is needed, e.g., sleeping): You can button up the neck support to the higher buttons for additional support.

1. Front Inward Carry (Newborn to Toddler)

This position is ideal for bonding and supporting your baby from birth. Ensure the seat and neck support are adjusted according to your baby's age and size as described in the "Setup" section.

  • Fasten the waistbelt securely around your natural waist or hips.
  • Hold your baby against your chest, centered on your body.
  • Bring the carrier panel up over your baby's back, ensuring their bottom is deep in the seat.
  • Slide your arms through the shoulder straps like a backpack.
  • Reach behind your back to fasten the chest clip, ensuring it is at shoulder blade level.
  • Tighten all straps until the carrier feels snug and secure, with baby high enough to kiss.

2. Hip Carry (6+ Months)

Once your baby has strong head and neck control and can sit unassisted, the hip carry offers a different perspective for them while keeping them close.

  • Fasten the waistbelt around your natural waist or hips, positioning the carrier panel to your side.
  • Place your baby on your hip, ensuring their bottom is deep in the carrier's seat.
  • Bring the carrier panel up over your baby's back.
  • Slide your arms through the shoulder straps.
  • Fasten the chest clip behind your back or on your shoulder, depending on comfort and carrier design.
  • Tighten all straps for a secure fit.

3. Back Carry (6+ Months)

For older babies with strong trunk control, the back carry is a comfortable option for longer outings and provides a great view for your child.

  • Fasten the waistbelt securely around your natural waist or hips.
  • Carefully transfer your baby to your back, ensuring they are centered and their bottom is deep in the seat.
  • Bring the carrier panel up over your baby's back.
  • Slide your arms through the shoulder straps.
  • Fasten the chest clip across your chest.
  • Tighten all straps for a secure and comfortable fit. Practice this position with assistance until you are confident.

Maintenance and Care

To keep your Ergobaby Adapt carrier clean and in optimal condition:

  • Machine Wash: The carrier is machine washable. Use cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent.
  • Drying: Air dry or tumble dry on low heat. Do not bleach, iron, or dry clean.
  • Storage: Store in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use.

Troubleshooting

  • Baby seems uncomfortable/fussy:
    • Check baby's positioning: Ensure they are in the ergonomic M-shape, with knees higher than their bottom.
    • Adjust tightness: The carrier should be snug but not too tight. Baby should be high enough to kiss.
    • Check for overheating: Ensure baby is not overdressed. The UPF baby hood can provide shade.
  • Parent discomfort (shoulder/back pain):
    • Adjust shoulder straps: Ensure they are evenly tightened and comfortable. The straps can be worn parallel or crossed for different comfort levels.
    • Adjust lumbar support: The padded lumbar support should sit comfortably on your lower back.
    • Check waistbelt position: It should be snug around your natural waist or hips to distribute weight effectively.
  • Difficulty with adjustments:
    • Refer to the "Setup and Adjustments" section and the provided video guide for visual assistance.
    • Practice adjustments without baby first to get a feel for the straps and buckles.
