Safety Information
Chainsaws are powerful tools that can cause serious injury if not handled properly. Always prioritize safety when working with chainsaw components. Adhere to the following safety guidelines:
- Read Your Chainsaw Manual: Always consult your chainsaw's original instruction manual for specific safety warnings and operating procedures.
- Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear appropriate PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear, when handling chainsaw parts or operating a chainsaw.
- Disconnect Power: Before performing any installation, adjustment, or maintenance on the chainsaw, ensure the engine is off and the spark plug wire is disconnected (for gasoline models) or the battery is removed (for electric/cordless models) to prevent accidental starting.
- Inspect Components: Before each use, inspect the bar and chain for damage, wear, or dullness. Replace damaged components immediately.
- Proper Tension: Ensure the chain is correctly tensioned according to your chainsaw's specifications. An improperly tensioned chain can derail, causing injury or damage.
- Sharp Chain: A sharp chain cuts more efficiently and reduces the risk of kickback. Keep your chain properly sharpened.
Package Contents
Your TrueCut Chainsaw Bar and Chain Combo package includes:
- 1 x TrueCut 18-inch Chainsaw Guide Bar
- 1 x TrueCut Chainsaw Chain (62 Drive Links, 3/8" LP Pitch, .050" Gauge, 9-Tooth Nose Sprocket)
Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to safely install your new TrueCut chainsaw bar and chain:
- Prepare the Chainsaw: Ensure the chainsaw engine is off and the spark plug wire is disconnected (or battery removed). Engage the chain brake.
- Remove Old Components: Loosen the bar nuts that secure the clutch cover. Remove the clutch cover, then carefully remove the old guide bar and chain.
- Clean Components: Clean any sawdust, debris, or old oil from the clutch area, bar mounting studs, and the chain tensioner mechanism.
- Install New Chain: Place the new TrueCut chain onto the clutch sprocket, ensuring the cutting edges of the chain teeth are facing the correct direction (usually forward on the top of the bar).
- Position New Bar: Slide the new TrueCut guide bar onto the bar mounting studs. Align the chain drive links with the groove in the guide bar.
- Engage Tensioner Pin: Ensure the chain tensioner pin on the chainsaw body engages with the hole in the guide bar.
- Replace Clutch Cover: Carefully replace the clutch cover, ensuring the chain brake lever is in the disengaged position (if applicable) and the bar nuts are finger-tight. Do not fully tighten yet.
- Adjust Chain Tension: While holding the tip of the guide bar up, use the chain tensioning screw (usually located on the side of the chainsaw) to adjust the chain tension. The chain should be snug against the bottom of the guide bar, but still able to be pulled freely by hand. There should be no sag on the underside of the bar.
- Final Tightening: Once the chain tension is correct, fully tighten the bar nuts while still holding the tip of the guide bar up.
- Verify Tension: Release the chain brake and pull the chain around the bar by hand to ensure it moves freely and maintains proper tension. Re-engage the chain brake.

Operating Considerations
While this manual focuses on the bar and chain, proper operation of the chainsaw is crucial for their longevity and your safety. Always ensure:
- Adequate Chain Lubrication: Ensure the chainsaw's oil reservoir is filled with appropriate bar and chain oil. The oiler system must be functioning correctly to lubricate the chain and bar during operation, preventing premature wear and overheating.
- Correct Chain Tension: Periodically check chain tension during operation, especially when the chain is new or after extended use. Heat expansion can affect tension.
- Sharpness: Operate only with a sharp chain. A dull chain increases effort, causes excessive wear, and can lead to dangerous kickback.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance of your TrueCut bar and chain will extend their lifespan and ensure optimal performance.
- Chain Sharpening: Sharpen the chain regularly using a round file of the correct diameter for your chain's pitch (typically 5/32" for 3/8" LP chain). Maintain consistent filing angles for all teeth.
- Bar Groove Cleaning: Periodically remove the guide bar and clean the bar groove to remove accumulated sawdust and debris. This ensures proper chain lubrication and movement.
- Bar Flipping: To promote even wear, flip the guide bar periodically (e.g., after every 8-10 hours of use). This helps distribute wear on both sides of the bar rails.
- Sprocket Nose Inspection: Inspect the sprocket nose (if applicable) for wear or damage. Ensure it spins freely.
- Lubrication: Always use quality bar and chain oil. Check the oil level before each use.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Chain comes off the bar | Incorrect chain tension, worn bar groove, damaged chain. | Adjust chain tension. Inspect bar groove for wear; replace if necessary. Inspect chain for damaged links; replace if necessary. |
| Chainsaw cuts crooked | Unevenly sharpened chain, worn guide bar rails. | Resharpen chain evenly. Inspect guide bar rails for uneven wear; replace bar if severely worn. |
| Chain smokes or overheats | Insufficient lubrication, dull chain, incorrect chain tension. | Check bar oil level and oiler function. Sharpen chain. Adjust chain tension. |
| Chain does not move freely | Chain too tight, debris in bar groove, damaged chain. | Loosen chain tension. Clean bar groove. Inspect chain for damage. |
