1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your 10Gtek 1000Base-LX Gigabit SFP LC SingleMode Transceiver. The 10Gtek 1000Base-LX SFP transceiver is a hot-pluggable module compatible with various networking equipment, including Cisco, Meraki, Ubiquiti UniFi, Fortinet, Mikrotik, and TP-Link. It supports Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, and other optical links, adhering to SFP MSA and IEEE 802.3ab standards.

2. Important Safety Information

Please read and retain this manual for important information. Adherence to these safety guidelines is crucial for safe operation and to prevent damage to the device.

• Static Sensitive Device: This product is sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Always use an ESD wrist strap or similar individual grounding device when handling it or coming into contact with it.
• Professional Use: This product is intended for use by qualified professionals only.
• Laser Safety: This product has been tested and complies with Class 1 laser limits. Caution: Do not look directly at the light-emitting device. Direct exposure to the laser can cause eye damage.

3. Package Contents

4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install the SFP module into your compatible networking equipment (e.g., fiber switch, router, NIC).

4.1. Installing the SFP Module

1. Prepare the Module: Before insertion, flip the bale clasp (the blue or black wire handle) on the SFP module up to the open position.
2. Align and Insert: Carefully align the SFP module with the designated SFP port on your networking device. Gently slide the module into the port until it clicks into place. Ensure it is fully seated.
3. Connect Fiber Cable: Remove the dust cap from the SFP module's LC connector ports. Insert the appropriate LC fiber optical patch cord (OS1/OS2/OS3 single-mode fiber) into the module's ports.

4.2. Removing the SFP Module

1. Disconnect Fiber: Carefully disconnect the fiber optical patch cord from the SFP module.
2. Open Bale Clasp: Open the bale clasp on the SFP module by pressing it down with your index finger.
3. Remove Module: Grasp the SFP module between your thumb and index finger and carefully pull it out from the switching module port.

5. Operating Instructions

Once installed, the 10Gtek SFP transceiver operates automatically. The module is hot-pluggable, meaning it can be inserted or removed while the host device is powered on, provided proper ESD precautions are taken.

5.1. Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM)

This SFP module features Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), also known as Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM). DDM allows you to monitor critical information regarding the status of the transmitted and received optical signals in real-time. This functionality helps in identifying potential issues such as signal degradation, power fluctuations, or temperature variations within the transceiver. Access to DDM data is typically provided through the host device's management interface (e.g., CLI or GUI of a switch).

5.2. Compatibility

The 10Gtek 1000Base-LX SFP module is designed for wide compatibility with various open switches and networking equipment. It is tested to be compatible with devices from manufacturers such as Cisco (GLC-LH-SMD/GLC-LH-SM/SFP-GE-L), Meraki (MA-SFP-1GB-LX10), Ubiquiti UniFi, Fortinet, Mikrotik, D-Link, Supermicro, Netgear, and TP-Link (TL-SM311LS).

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your SFP transceiver.

• Keep Clean: Always keep the optical connectors clean. Use appropriate fiber optic cleaning tools and procedures to remove dust and contaminants. Dust caps should be used when the module is not connected to a fiber cable.
• Handle with Care: Avoid dropping or subjecting the module to physical shock.
• Environmental Conditions: Operate the module within its specified operating temperature range of 0°C to 70°C. Avoid extreme humidity or temperature fluctuations.
• ESD Protection: Continue to observe ESD precautions when handling the module, even after initial installation.

If you encounter issues with your 10Gtek SFP transceiver, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

• No Link Light/Connectivity:
  • Ensure the SFP module is fully seated in the port. Remove and re-insert it.
  • Verify that the fiber optic cable is correctly connected to both the SFP module and the remote device.
  • Check the fiber optic cable for damage (kinks, sharp bends).
  • Clean the fiber optic connectors on both the cable and the SFP module.
  • Confirm that the remote device's SFP port is active and configured correctly.
  • Ensure you are using single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2/OS3) for this 1000Base-LX module.
• Intermittent Connectivity:
  • Check for loose connections on both ends of the fiber cable.
  • Monitor DDM values (if accessible) for abnormal transmit/receive power levels or temperature.
  • Test with a different fiber cable if possible.
• Module Not Recognized by Host Device:
  • Ensure your host device (switch, router) firmware is up to date.
  • Verify that the host device supports 1000Base-LX SFP modules.
  • Try the module in a different SFP port or a different compatible device to rule out a faulty port.

9.1. Limited Warranty

10Gtek warrants this product for three years from the date of purchase. During this period, 10Gtek will, at its option, repair or replace products that have failed under normal use. Replacements will be provided at no charge for parts or labor, with the customer responsible for any transportation costs.

This Limited Warranty does not cover:

• Damage caused by accident, abuse, misapplication, natural disaster, or other external causes.
• Products modified or altered without written permission from 10Gtek.
• Damage from improper installation, connection, maintenance, or repair.
• Damage from improper use of software, upgraded software, or upgraded OS of the equipment.
