2. Important Safety Information

WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions may result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Read all instructions before using the pressure cooker.
  • Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs.
  • Close supervision is necessary when the pressure cooker is used near children.
  • Do not place the pressure cooker in a heated oven.
  • Exercise extreme caution when moving a pressure cooker containing hot liquids.
  • Do not use the pressure cooker for purposes other than its intended use.
  • This appliance cooks under pressure. Improper use may result in scalding injury. Make certain unit is properly closed before operating. See "Closing the Lid" section.
  • Never force open the pressure cooker. Make sure internal pressure is completely released before opening. See "Releasing Pressure" section.
  • Do not fill the unit more than two-thirds full. When cooking foods that expand during cooking, such as rice or dried vegetables, do not fill the unit more than half full.
  • Use only IMUSA replacement parts.
  • Do not use this pressure cooker for deep frying with oil.
  • Ensure the pressure regulator and safety valve are clean and free of obstructions before each use.
  • The pressure cooker is not dishwasher safe. Hand wash only.

3. Product Components

Your IMUSA USA GK-80601 Gourmet Pressure Cooker consists of the following main parts:

  • Pressure Cooker Pot: The main cooking vessel, made of aluminum.
  • Lid: Features a safety locking mechanism and cool-touch handle.
  • Pressure Regulator (Weight Valve): Controls and releases excess pressure during cooking.
  • Safety Valve: A secondary safety mechanism to release pressure if the main regulator fails.
  • Rubber Gasket (Sealing Ring): Creates an airtight seal between the lid and the pot.
  • Handles: Cool-touch handles for safe handling.

4. Setup and First Use

  1. Unpack: Carefully remove all packaging materials and inspect the pressure cooker for any damage.
  2. Clean: Before first use, wash the pot, lid, and all removable parts (regulator, gasket) with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
  3. Assemble: Ensure the rubber gasket is properly seated inside the lid. Place the pressure regulator onto its stem on the lid.
  4. Capacity Check: Understand the maximum fill levels. Do not fill the cooker more than two-thirds full with food and liquid. For foods that expand (e.g., rice, dried beans), do not fill more than half full.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Filling the Pressure Cooker

  • Add food and the required amount of liquid to the pressure cooker pot.
  • Ensure the total volume of food and liquid does not exceed two-thirds of the pot's capacity. For foods that expand, do not exceed half capacity.

5.2. Closing the Lid

  1. Align the lid with the pot, ensuring the rubber gasket is correctly positioned.
  2. Rotate the lid handle until it locks securely into place. The safety locking mechanism should engage.
  3. Place the pressure regulator (weight valve) onto the steam vent pipe on the lid.

5.3. Building Pressure

  1. Place the pressure cooker on a stovetop burner compatible with its base (electric or gas).
  2. Turn the heat to high. Steam will begin to escape from the vent pipe before the regulator is fully engaged.
  3. Once the pressure regulator begins to rock or hiss steadily, indicating full pressure, reduce the heat to maintain a gentle rocking motion.
  4. Begin timing your recipe from this point.

5.4. Cooking

  • Maintain the recommended cooking time for your recipe.
  • Do not leave the pressure cooker unattended while cooking.

5.5. Releasing Pressure

There are several methods to release pressure:

  • Natural Release: Remove the pressure cooker from heat and allow it to cool down naturally. Pressure will gradually decrease. This method is suitable for foods that benefit from additional cooking time, such as roasts or stews.
  • Quick Release (Cold Water Method): For faster pressure release, carefully place the pressure cooker under cold running water in the sink, avoiding the pressure regulator and safety valve. Run cold water over the lid until pressure is fully released. This method is suitable for delicate foods like vegetables.
  • Manual Release: Carefully lift or tilt the pressure regulator to allow steam to escape. Use caution as steam will be hot. This method is suitable for foods that require precise cooking times.

IMPORTANT: Never attempt to open the lid until all internal pressure has been released. The safety locking mechanism prevents opening under pressure.

5.6. Opening the Lid

  • Once all pressure is released (the safety valve indicator will drop, and no steam will escape when the regulator is removed), carefully remove the pressure regulator.
  • Rotate the lid handle to unlock and lift the lid away from you to avoid residual steam.

6. Maintenance and Cleaning

  • After Each Use: Wash the pot, lid, and all removable parts with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately to prevent water spots and corrosion.
  • Gasket Care: Regularly inspect the rubber gasket for cracks, hardening, or damage. Replace if necessary, as a damaged gasket can prevent proper sealing.
  • Vent Cleaning: Ensure the steam vent pipe and safety valve are clear of food particles. Use a small brush or pipe cleaner if needed.
  • Storage: Store the pressure cooker with the lid inverted on the pot to allow air circulation and prevent the gasket from compressing permanently.
  • Dishwasher Safety: This pressure cooker is NOT dishwasher safe. Hand wash only.

7. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Steam leaks from under the lid. Lid not properly closed; gasket improperly seated or damaged; food debris on rim. Ensure lid is securely locked. Check and reposition or replace gasket. Clean pot rim and lid.
Pressure does not build. Insufficient liquid; heat too low; pressure regulator not in place; vent pipe blocked. Add more liquid. Increase heat. Place regulator on vent pipe. Clean vent pipe.
Lid cannot be opened after cooking. Internal pressure still present. Ensure all pressure is released using one of the methods described in "Releasing Pressure". Do not force open.
Food is undercooked. Insufficient cooking time; pressure not maintained. Increase cooking time. Ensure heat is adjusted to maintain steady pressure.
