2. Setup and Installation

2.1 Unpacking and Included Components

Carefully unpack the switch and verify that all components are present. The package should include:

  • Cisco SG350 Gigabit Switch
  • Power Adapter
  • Mounting Kit (for desktop or rackmount installation)
  • Console Cable
  • Quick Start Guide

2.2 Physical Installation

The SG350-10P switch can be installed on a desktop or mounted in a rack using the provided kit.

  1. Desktop Placement: Place the switch on a flat, stable surface, ensuring adequate ventilation around the device.
  2. Rack Mounting: Attach the provided mounting brackets to the sides of the switch and secure it into a standard 19-inch equipment rack.

2.3 Connecting the Switch

  1. Power Connection: Connect the power adapter to the switch's power input and then to a power outlet.
  2. Network Connections: Connect your network devices (computers, servers, access points, IP phones, etc.) to the RJ45 Ethernet ports (1-8). For uplink connections to other switches or routers, use the SFP ports (9-10) with appropriate transceivers.
  3. Console Connection (Optional): For initial configuration or advanced troubleshooting via CLI, connect the console cable from your computer to the switch's console port.

2.4 Initial Configuration

The switch can be configured using its Web User Interface (WebUI), Command Line Interface (CLI), or Cisco FindIT Network Manager. For initial setup, it is often easiest to use the WebUI.

  • WebUI Access: Connect a computer directly to one of the switch's Ethernet ports. Configure your computer's IP address to be in the same subnet as the switch's default IP (refer to the Quick Start Guide for default IP). Open a web browser and enter the switch's IP address.
  • Cisco FindIT Network Manager: This tool provides auto-discovery and zero-touch deployment capabilities, simplifying the setup and management of multiple Cisco Business devices.

3. Operating the Switch

3.1 Basic Network Operation

Once powered on and connected, the switch will automatically begin forwarding Ethernet traffic between connected devices. The Link/Act LEDs on each port indicate connection status and activity.

3.2 Power over Ethernet (PoE) Functionality

The SG350-10P provides Power over Ethernet (PoE) on 8 ports, allowing you to power compatible devices such as IP phones, wireless access points, and IP cameras directly through the Ethernet cable. This eliminates the need for separate power adapters for these devices.

3.3 Advanced Features

The managed capabilities of the SG350-10P allow for advanced network configurations:

  • VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks): Segment your network for improved security and performance.
  • Quality of Service (QoS): Prioritize critical network traffic (e.g., voice, video) to ensure optimal performance.
  • Static Routing: Configure routes for traffic between different IP subnets.
  • Security Features: Implement Access Control Lists (ACLs), 802.1x port-based authentication, and IP Source Guard to protect your network from unauthorized access and attacks.
  • Monitoring: Use SNMP and the Cisco Business Dashboard to monitor network performance and device status.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Firmware Updates

Regularly check the Cisco support website for firmware updates. Keeping your switch's firmware up-to-date ensures optimal performance, security, and access to new features. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware update package for a successful upgrade.

4.2 Configuration Backup and Restore

It is highly recommended to regularly back up your switch's configuration. This allows for quick restoration of settings in case of an unexpected issue or when replacing the device.

4.3 Environmental Considerations

Ensure the switch operates within its specified temperature and humidity ranges. Maintain proper ventilation to prevent overheating. Keep the device free from dust and debris.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 No Power

  • Verify the power adapter is securely connected to the switch and a working power outlet.
  • Check the power LED on the switch. If it's off, try a different power outlet or adapter.

5.2 No Network Connectivity

  • Check the Link/Act LEDs on the connected ports. A solid green or amber light indicates a link, and a blinking light indicates activity.
  • Ensure Ethernet cables are properly seated and not damaged.
  • Verify IP address configurations on connected devices and the switch.
  • If using SFP ports, ensure compatible transceivers are used and properly inserted.

5.3 PoE Devices Not Powering On

  • Confirm the device is PoE compatible and connected to a PoE-enabled port.
  • Check the PoE status LEDs on the switch.
  • Ensure the total power budget (62W) is not exceeded by all connected PoE devices.

5.4 Accessing the WebUI

  • If you cannot access the WebUI, ensure your computer's IP address is in the same subnet as the switch.
  • Try clearing your browser's cache or using a different browser.
  • If the switch's IP address has been changed and forgotten, you may need to perform a factory reset (refer to the Quick Start Guide for instructions).
