  1. Remove the protective cap: Carefully remove the orange protective cap covering the connectivity ports on the LaCie Rugged Raid.
  2. Connect the cable:
    • For Thunderbolt connection: Connect one end of the Thunderbolt cable to the LaCie drive and the other end to a Thunderbolt port on your computer.
    • For USB 3.0 connection: Connect one end of the USB 3.0 cable to the LaCie drive and the other end to a USB 3.0 (or compatible) port on your computer.
  3. Power On: The drive is bus-powered via the Thunderbolt or USB connection. No external power adapter is typically required.
  4. Initial Setup with LaCie Setup Assistant:

Upon first connection, the LaCie Setup Assistant will guide you through formatting the drive for compatibility with your operating system (Mac, PC, or both) and configuring the RAID mode (RAID 0 or RAID 1). Follow the on-screen instructions.

Note: Configuring RAID 0 maximizes storage capacity and speed but offers no data redundancy. RAID 1 mirrors data across both internal drives, providing data protection at the cost of half the total storage capacity.

2. Using the Ivation Compact Portable Hard Drive Case

The included Ivation case provides protection and portability for your LaCie Rugged Raid drive and its cables.

Operating the LaCie Rugged Raid

Data Transfer

Once connected and recognized by your computer, the LaCie Rugged Raid will appear as an external drive. You can drag and drop files to and from the drive, or use your operating system's file management tools for copying, moving, and deleting data.

RAID Modes

  • RAID 0 (Striped): Data is split across both internal drives, offering faster performance and full capacity (4TB). This mode does not provide data redundancy; if one drive fails, all data may be lost.
  • RAID 1 (Mirrored): Data is duplicated on both internal drives, providing data redundancy. If one drive fails, your data is still accessible from the other drive. This mode offers half the total capacity (2TB usable).

The RAID mode is configured during the initial setup using the LaCie Setup Assistant. Changing the RAID mode after initial setup will erase all data on the drive.

Safe Removal

Always safely eject or unmount the LaCie Rugged Raid from your computer's operating system before disconnecting the cable to prevent data corruption.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the drive and case. Avoid liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check the LaCie support website for any available firmware updates for your device.
  • Data Backup: While RAID 1 offers redundancy, it is always recommended to maintain separate backups of critical data.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the drive in its protective Ivation case in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

Drive not recognized by computer:
  • Ensure the cable is securely connected to both the drive and the computer.
  • Try a different Thunderbolt or USB port on your computer.
  • Try a different cable.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Check your computer's Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (macOS) to see if the drive is detected but unformatted or has a partition issue.
Slow data transfer speeds:
  • Ensure you are connected to a Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 port on your computer. Connecting to a USB 2.0 port will result in slower speeds.
  • Close other applications that might be using significant system resources.
  • Check the health of the drive using appropriate diagnostic tools.
Drive making unusual noises:

Unusual clicking, grinding, or loud whirring noises may indicate a potential hardware issue. Immediately back up any critical data if possible and contact LaCie support.
