Setup
1. Connecting the Battery
Before initial use, the internal battery must be connected. The unit is shipped with the battery disconnected for safety during transit.
Video 1: Official APC guide on connecting the battery in a BE Series UPS. This video demonstrates how to access the battery compartment, connect the internal battery cable, and reassemble the unit for first-time use.
- Lay the UPS unit on its side to access the bottom panel.
- Locate the battery compartment cover. Press the indicated tabs to slide off the cover.
- Carefully pull out the battery. You will see a red cable that needs to be connected.
- Connect the red cable firmly into its receptacle. Ensure it is pushed fully in for a secure connection to avoid beeping or inconsistent performance.
- Place the battery back into the compartment with the wires positioned to avoid pinching.
- Slide the battery cover back on until it clicks into place.
2. Connecting to AC Power
Once the battery is connected, plug the UPS into a standard wall outlet.
- Plug the 3-prong power cord (NEMA 5-15P) from the UPS into a grounded wall outlet.
- The unit will begin charging the internal battery. Allow the battery to charge for at least 8 hours before connecting critical equipment to ensure full runtime capacity.
Operating Instructions
1. Powering On/Off
- To turn on the UPS, press the power button located on the front panel. The power indicator light will illuminate.
- To turn off the UPS, press and hold the power button until the power indicator light turns off.
2. Connecting Devices
The APC BE425M features two types of outlets:
- Battery Backup & Surge Protection Outlets (4 outlets): These outlets provide power from the internal battery during outages and protect against surges. Connect critical devices such as your computer, monitor, router, and modem to these outlets.
- Surge Protection Only Outlets (2 outlets): These outlets provide surge protection but do NOT provide battery backup power. Connect non-critical devices like printers, scanners, or phone chargers to these outlets.

Figure 3: Top view of the UPS, clearly labeling the Battery + Surge and Surge Only outlets.
3. During a Power Outage
When a power outage occurs, the UPS will automatically switch to battery power, providing uninterrupted power to devices connected to the Battery Backup & Surge Protection outlets. The unit may emit an audible alarm to indicate it is operating on battery power.
Video 2: Official APC video highlighting the importance of a UPS in a smart home, demonstrating how it keeps essential devices like modems and routers online during power interruptions.
- If the power outage is prolonged, save your work and properly shut down your computer to prevent data loss.
- To silence the alarm, briefly press the power button. The alarm will resume if the battery is critically low.
Maintenance
1. Battery Care
The internal battery is a sealed lead-acid battery and is not user-replaceable. If the battery needs replacement, it must be serviced by a qualified technician. Contact APC support for service options.
2. Cleaning
To clean the exterior of the UPS, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners, as they may damage the unit.
Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your APC BE425M Back-UPS, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:
- No Power/Unit Not Turning On: Ensure the power cord is securely plugged into a working wall outlet and the UPS. Verify the battery is correctly connected as per the setup instructions.
- Constant Beeping: A continuous beeping sound typically indicates that the UPS is operating on battery power due to an outage or low battery. If the battery is low, it needs to be recharged or replaced by a technician.
- Overload Alarm: If the connected equipment draws more power than the UPS can supply, an overload alarm may sound. Disconnect non-essential devices from the battery backup outlets.
- No Power to Outlets: Check if the circuit breaker on the side or back of the UPS has tripped. Press it to reset if necessary.
