5. Setup

5.1 Physical Installation

  1. Mounting: The SG250-26 can be placed on a desktop or mounted in a standard 19-inch equipment rack using the included rack-mount kit. Ensure adequate space for ventilation.
  2. Power Connection: Connect the supplied power cord to the switch's power input and then to a grounded electrical outlet.
  3. Network Connections: Connect your network devices (computers, servers, other switches) to the RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet ports (1A-24A) using standard Ethernet cables. For uplink connections to other network devices or the core network, use the SFP ports (G25A, G25B) with appropriate SFP transceivers and fiber optic cables.

5.2 Initial Configuration

The switch can be configured via a web-based graphical user interface (GUI) or a command-line interface (CLI).

  1. Connect to Management Interface: Connect a computer directly to any of the switch's RJ45 ports. Configure your computer's IP address to be in the same subnet as the switch's default IP address (refer to the Quick Start Guide for default IP).
  2. Access Web GUI: Open a web browser and enter the switch's default IP address. Log in using the default credentials (usually 'cisco' for both username and password).
  3. Cisco FindIT Network Manager: For easier discovery and management of Cisco Business devices, consider installing the Cisco FindIT Network Manager. This tool simplifies the deployment and configuration process.

8. Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Switch does not power on.No power, faulty power cord/adapter.Ensure power cord is securely connected to the switch and a working power outlet. Test the outlet with another device. Try a different power cord if available.
No network connectivity on a port.Incorrect cable, faulty cable, port disabled, incorrect VLAN configuration.Check cable connection and integrity. Ensure the correct cable type (straight-through or crossover) is used if not auto-MDI/MDIX. Verify port status in the web GUI. Check VLAN settings for the port.
Slow network performance.Network congestion, duplex mismatch, outdated firmware.Check network traffic. Ensure duplex settings match between the switch port and connected device. Update switch firmware to the latest version.
Cannot access web management interface.Incorrect IP address, network configuration issue, firewall.Verify the switch's IP address and your computer's IP address are in the same subnet. Disable temporary firewalls on your computer. Try resetting the switch to factory defaults if access is completely lost.
Resetting the device.Configuration issues, forgotten password.Locate the Reset button on the front panel. Use a paperclip to press and hold the button for more than 10 seconds to restore factory default settings. This will erase all configurations.
