Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when working with vehicle batteries and jumper cables. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury, burns, or death.

  • Wear proper eye protection and shield your face from possible explosion.
  • Before beginning, consult the owner's manuals for both vehicles for battery jumping procedures, which may vary by vehicle manufacturer.
  • Make sure that the vehicles are not making contact before connecting cables.
  • Check that all vent caps are secure. If in doubt, cover them with a sturdy, acid-proof material before connecting cables.
  • Ignition should be off on both vehicles and the vehicle with the weak battery should have the electrical load minimized (e.g., all lights, radio, AC etc. turned off).
  • Voltage and polarity of both vehicles should be equal (e.g., 12 volts, negative ground).

Setup & Permanent Installation

The permanent installation kit allows for easy and quick connection for future jump-starts without needing to access the battery terminals directly.

  1. Connect the ring terminals of the permanent installation kit to your vehicle's battery posts (Red to Positive (+), Black to Negative (-)).
  2. Securely mount the quick connect plug in an accessible location on your vehicle, such as the front or rear bumper, using the provided hardware.
  3. Ensure the plug is protected from elements and potential damage.

Operating Instructions: Jump Starting a Vehicle

Follow these steps carefully to jump start a vehicle using your Energizer Jumper Cables. Ensure all safety precautions are observed.

Cable Connection Procedure:

  1. Clamp one end of the Positive (+) RED cable to the Positive (+) terminal of the boosting battery. Make sure the clamp is making good contact with the terminal.
  2. Clamp the other end of the Positive (+) RED cable to the Positive (+) terminal of the jumping (stalled) battery. Some wiggling may be required to ensure a good "bite" with the clamp teeth.
  3. Clamp one end of the Negative (-) BLACK cable to the Negative (-) terminal of the boosting battery.
  4. Clamp opposite end of the Negative (-) BLACK cable to the engine block or heavy unpainted metal part of the stalled vehicle's chassis. This point is referred to as a "good ground". Make sure the clamp is making good contact with the metal.

Vehicle Starting Procedure:

  1. Allow several minutes of additional charge time for weak battery.
  2. Start the engine of the boosting vehicle. Allow it to run for 3-5 minutes.
  3. Attempt to start the stalled vehicle. If it does not start after attempting a second time, allow the boosting vehicle to run for another 5 minutes before attempting to start the stalled vehicle again.
  4. Once the stalled vehicle starts, remove cables in reverse order of connection.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life of your jumper cables:

  • After each use, inspect cables and clamps for any damage, fraying, or corrosion.
  • Clean clamps and cables with a damp cloth if dirty. For corroded clamps, use a wire brush or sandpaper to ensure good contact.
  • Store the cables neatly coiled in the provided carry bag to prevent tangles and protect them from damage.
  • Keep the cables in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

If the stalled vehicle does not start after following the operating instructions, consider these troubleshooting tips:

  • No Crank/Clicking Sound:
    • Ensure all connections are secure and making good contact. Clean any corrosion from battery terminals and clamps.
    • Verify the boosting vehicle's battery is fully charged.
    • Allow more time for the weak battery to charge (5-10 minutes) before attempting to start again.
  • Engine Cranks but Doesn't Start:
    • This may indicate an issue beyond the battery (e.g., fuel, ignition, or starter problems). Consult a mechanic.
  • Cables Get Hot:
    • Immediately disconnect the cables. This could indicate a poor connection, incorrect gauge for the application, or a severely discharged battery. Ensure proper gauge cables are used for your vehicle type.
