Jameson FG-6PKG-7 FG-Series Manual Pole Saw and Tree Pruner Instruction Manual

Introduction

The Jameson FG-6PKG-7 FG-Series Manual Pole Saw and Tree Pruner is designed for efficient and safe tree trimming. This kit includes a double-pulley pruner for reduced effort, a 16-inch Barracuda Tri-Cut saw blade for clean cuts, and two 6-foot fiberglass poles for extended reach up to 12 feet. The FG Series poles are batch tested to meet OSHA requirements for electrical insulation, providing an added layer of safety when working near potential electrical hazards.

Safety Information

WARNING: Always read and understand all safety instructions before operating this tool. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or death.

General Safety Guidelines

  • Always inspect the tool for damage or wear before each use. Do not use if any components are damaged.
  • Maintain a safe working distance from power lines. Fiberglass poles are tested for electrical resistance, but direct contact with live electrical wires can be fatal.
  • Ensure a stable footing and clear work area. Be aware of falling branches.
  • Do not operate the tool while fatigued or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when using the pole saw and pruner:

  • Safety Glasses: To protect eyes from debris.
  • Gloves: For improved grip and hand protection.
  • Hard Hat: To protect against falling objects.
  • Sturdy Footwear: For stability and foot protection.

2. Attaching the Pruner Head

  1. Insert the pruner head into the pole adapter. Secure it by ensuring the leaf spring locking clip engages.
  2. Thread the 20-foot pruner rope through the double pulley system on the pruner head. Ensure the rope moves freely.
  3. Tie a secure knot at the end of the rope to prevent it from slipping through the handle.

Operating Instructions

Using the Pruner

  1. Extend the poles to the desired length, ensuring all connections are secure.
  2. Position the pruner head around the branch you intend to cut. Ensure the branch fits within the pruner's capacity (up to 1-3/4 inches).
  3. With one hand holding the pole firmly, use the other hand to pull the pruner rope firmly and steadily. The double-pulley system is designed to reduce the required pulling force.
  4. Allow the branch to fall safely, ensuring no one is beneath it.

Using the Saw

  1. Extend the poles to the desired length, ensuring all connections are secure.
  2. Position the saw blade on the underside of the branch first, making a small relief cut. This helps prevent bark stripping when the main cut is made.
  3. Move the saw blade back and forth using smooth, steady strokes. Avoid forcing the blade, allowing the sharp teeth to do the work.
  4. Continue sawing until the branch is cut through. Allow the branch to fall safely, ensuring no one is beneath it.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Jameson pole saw and pruner.

  • Cleaning: After each use, remove sap, dirt, and debris from the pruner blades, saw blade, and pulley mechanism. A damp cloth and mild detergent can be used, followed by thorough drying.
  • Lubrication: Apply a light, non-gumming oil to the moving parts of the pruner head and the saw blade to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.
  • Blade Care: Regularly inspect the pruner and saw blades for sharpness. Dull blades can lead to inefficient cutting and increased effort. Sharpen blades as needed or replace them if they are severely damaged or worn.
  • Storage: Store the tool in a clean, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure blades are protected to prevent accidental injury.

Troubleshooting

Here are solutions to common issues you might encounter:

  • Pruner not cutting cleanly: This often indicates dull or dirty blades. Clean the blades thoroughly and sharpen them if necessary. Ensure the pruner mechanism is free of debris.
  • Rope tangles or does not pull smoothly: Check that the pruner rope is correctly threaded through all pulleys and is not twisted. Ensure there are no knots or obstructions in the rope path.
  • Poles not connecting securely: Inspect the leaf spring locking clips and the corresponding holes on the poles for any damage or debris that might prevent a secure connection. Clean any debris and ensure the clip springs back properly.
  • Saw blade sticking in wood: This can happen if the blade is dull or if too much force is applied. Ensure the blade is sharp and use smooth, consistent strokes. Making a relief cut on the underside of the branch first can also help.
