Cruiser Replacement Fusion Splicer Electrodes User Manual

Model: TC28-1

1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of Cruiser Replacement Fusion Splicer Electrodes, Model TC28-1. These electrodes are designed for use with Fujikura FSM-17S, FSM-18S, FSM-50R, FSM-50S, FSM-60S, and FSM-60R fusion splicers.

The electrodes are constructed from high-quality tungsten steel, ensuring durability and stable discharge performance for reliable fiber optic splicing.

2. Installation

Follow these steps carefully to replace the electrodes in your fusion splicer. Ensure the splicer is powered off before beginning the installation process.

  1. Power Off: Make sure the fusion splicer is shut down and disconnected from its power source.
  2. Remove Old Electrodes:
    • Remove the protective cover of the electrode chamber.
    • Loosen the screw fixing the upper electrode and carefully remove the upper electrode.
    • Then loosen the top wire of the lower electrode and remove the lower electrode.
  3. Install New Electrodes:
    • Install the new electrodes in the reverse order of removal.
    • Ensure the electrodes are securely fastened but do not overtighten.
    • The gap between the two electrode tips is required to be 2.6 mm plus or minus 0.2 mm.
  4. Handling Precaution: During the assembly process, avoid touching the electrode tips directly to prevent damage or contamination.

3. Initial Operation and Calibration

After installing new electrodes, it is crucial to perform an arc position calibration to ensure optimal splicing performance.

  1. Power On: After the electrodes are installed, turn on the fusion splicer power switch.
  2. Access Menu: Once the welding machine enters the initial screen, press the menu key to enter the first-level menu.
  3. Calibrate Arc Position: Find the machine maintenance option by moving the cursor. Select the "Clean (aged) electrode" item. After confirming this selection, the machine will automatically discharge to clean and age the electrodes, effectively calibrating the arc position.

4. Maintenance and Storage

Proper maintenance and storage will extend the lifespan and ensure the consistent performance of your electrodes.

  • Keep Dry: Always try to keep the electrode rod in a dry and well-ventilated environment. Humidity can affect electrode performance and longevity.
  • Protective Storage: Store electrodes in their provided plastic protective box when not in use. This protects them from physical damage and environmental factors.
  • Avoid Contamination: Prevent dust, dirt, and oils from coming into contact with the electrode tips.

5. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues related to electrode performance. For complex problems, refer to your fusion splicer's main instruction manual or contact technical support.

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Poor splice quality / High splice loss
  • Incorrect electrode gap
  • Contaminated electrode tips
  • Electrodes not properly aged/calibrated
  • Worn-out electrodes
  • Verify electrode gap (2.6 ± 0.2 mm).
  • Clean electrode tips carefully with a lint-free wipe and alcohol.
  • Perform electrode aging/calibration procedure (Section 3).
  • Replace electrodes if they have exceeded their lifespan (approx. 4000 splices) or show visible wear.
Electrode breakdown / Short lifespan
  • Improper handling during installation
  • Storage in humid or dusty environment
  • Excessive use beyond recommended lifespan
  • Handle electrodes by the body, not the tips.
  • Store in the protective box in a dry, ventilated area.
  • Replace electrodes as needed based on usage and performance.
