Ortlieb Back-Roller Pro Classic Pannier Bags User Manual

Model: Back-Roller Pro Classic

1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your Ortlieb Back-Roller Pro Classic bicycle pannier bags. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the product to ensure safe and efficient use.

The Ortlieb Back-Roller Pro Classic is designed for bicycle touring and daily commuting, offering significant storage capacity and waterproof protection for your belongings.

2. Safety Information

  • Ensure panniers are securely attached to the bicycle rack before riding. Loose panniers can interfere with bicycle operation and cause accidents.
  • Distribute weight evenly between both panniers to maintain bicycle balance.
  • Do not overload the panniers beyond their stated capacity. Refer to the specifications section for maximum load.
  • Regularly check all attachment points for wear and tear. Replace damaged components immediately.
  • Be aware of the increased width and weight of your bicycle when panniers are attached, especially when maneuvering in traffic or tight spaces.

3. Setup and Installation

The Ortlieb Back-Roller Pro Classic panniers feature the Quick-Lock 2.1 system for easy and secure attachment to most bicycle racks.

3.1 Attaching to the Bicycle Rack

  1. Identify the Quick-Lock 2.1 hooks on the back of the pannier. These hooks are designed to automatically close around the rack tubing.
  2. Position the pannier over your bicycle's rear rack. The Quick-Lock hooks should align with the top tubes of the rack.
  3. Press the pannier down firmly onto the rack. The hooks will engage and secure the pannier.
  4. Adjust the lower hook (if present and adjustable) to prevent the pannier from swinging. This hook typically slides along a rail and can be tightened to the rack's vertical stays.
  5. Ensure the pannier is stable and does not wobble. The Quick-Lock system is tool-free and suitable for rack tubes up to 16 mm in diameter.

The panniers can be used on either the left or right side of the bicycle rack.

4. Operation

4.1 Packing the Panniers

  • The main compartment offers a generous capacity.
  • An additional, mounted front compartment (approximately 4 liters capacity per bag) provides quick access for smaller items such as water bottles, maps, or snacks.
  • Utilize the integrated inner pocket for organizing smaller valuables.
  • For optimal waterproofing, ensure the roll-top closure of the main compartment is securely rolled down at least three times and fastened with the buckles.

4.2 Carrying the Panniers

Each pannier is equipped with a shoulder strap for convenient off-bike transport. Attach the strap to the designated loops on the pannier when carrying it by hand.

4.3 Visibility

The panniers feature strong reflectors on both sides to enhance visibility during low-light conditions, contributing to rider safety.

5. Maintenance and Care

  • Cleaning: Clean the panniers with mild soap and water. Use a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Drying: Allow the panniers to air dry completely before storage to prevent mildew.
  • Waterproofing: The outer material is made from waterproof, abrasion-resistant polyester. To maintain waterproofing, avoid puncturing or tearing the fabric. If damage occurs, Ortlieb offers repair kits.
  • Storage: Store panniers in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use.
  • Hardware: Periodically check the Quick-Lock system and all buckles for proper function and signs of wear.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Pannier not attaching securely: Ensure the Quick-Lock hooks are properly aligned with the rack tubes and pressed down firmly. Check if the rack tube diameter is within the 16 mm limit.
  • Water leakage: Verify that the roll-top closure is rolled down at least three times and the buckles are securely fastened. Inspect the fabric for any tears or punctures.
  • Pannier swinging excessively: Adjust the lower hook (if applicable) to tighten its grip on the rack's vertical stays. Ensure weight is evenly distributed.
