Setup

1. Initial Charging

Your Eco-Drive watch is powered by light. Before initial use, or if the watch has stopped, ensure it is fully charged. Expose the watch dial to bright light (natural sunlight is ideal) for several hours. The watch will begin operating once sufficient charge is accumulated.

  • Avoid placing the watch in direct sunlight for extended periods in extremely hot environments to prevent overheating.
  • A full charge can last for several months in darkness, but regular exposure to light is recommended.

2. Setting the Time

  1. Pull the crown out to the second click position. The second hand will stop.
  2. Rotate the crown to set the hour and minute hands. Ensure the AM/PM is correctly set if your watch has a 24-hour indicator or date changes at midnight.
  3. Push the crown back into the normal position. The second hand will resume movement.

3. Setting the Date

  1. Pull the crown out to the first click position.
  2. Rotate the crown to adjust the date. Avoid setting the date between 9:00 PM and 1:00 AM, as this may interfere with the automatic date change mechanism.
  3. Push the crown back into the normal position.

Operating the Watch

1. Basic Timekeeping

The watch displays hours, minutes, and seconds using the main hands. The date is displayed in a window on the dial.

2. Chronograph Function

The BL5540-53E features a chronograph (stopwatch) function. Specific operation may vary slightly, but generally:

  • Start/Stop: Press the upper pusher (button) to start and stop the chronograph.
  • Reset: While the chronograph is stopped, press the lower pusher to reset the chronograph hands to zero.
  • Refer to the detailed movement module guide for advanced chronograph features if available.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

Wipe the watch case and band regularly with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and perspiration. For stainless steel bands, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by a dry cloth. Avoid using chemical cleaners or abrasive materials.

2. Water Resistance

The Citizen BL5540-53E has a specified water resistance. Always ensure the crown is pushed in completely to maintain water resistance. Avoid operating the crown or pushers when the watch is wet or submerged. Water resistance ratings are not permanent and may decrease over time due to wear and tear.

3. Eco-Drive Charging Guidelines

  • Regular Exposure: Expose the watch to light regularly to maintain optimal charge.
  • Avoid Obstruction: Do not cover the watch dial with clothing for extended periods.
  • Temperature: Avoid charging in extremely high temperatures (e.g., on a car dashboard in direct sunlight) as this can damage the watch.

4. Storage

When storing the watch for extended periods, ensure it is exposed to light periodically to prevent it from running out of charge. Store in a cool, dry place away from strong magnetic fields.

Troubleshooting

  • Watch Not Running:

If the watch has stopped, it may be due to insufficient charge. Expose the watch to bright light for several hours. If it still does not start, consult a service center.

  • Incorrect Time/Date:

Refer to the "Setting the Time" and "Setting the Date" sections to re-adjust. Ensure the crown is fully pushed in after adjustment.

  • Chronograph Hands Not Resetting to Zero:

Some chronograph movements allow for manual adjustment of the chronograph hand positions. Consult a Citizen service center if the issue persists after attempting a standard reset.
