Product Overview

The Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 Sports DG OS HSM lens is a high-performance telephoto zoom lens engineered for demanding photographic situations. It features an Optical Stabilizer (OS) for minimizing camera shake and a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) for fast and quiet autofocus. When paired with the Sigma TC-1401 1.4x Teleconverter, the focal length is extended, allowing for even greater reach while maintaining autofocus capabilities up to F8.

Operating Instructions

Using the 150-600mm Lens:

  • Focal Length Adjustment: Rotate the zoom ring to adjust the focal length between 150mm and 600mm.
  • Autofocus (AF) / Manual Focus (MF): Use the switch on the lens barrel to select between autofocus and manual focus modes. The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) provides fast and quiet AF.
  • Optical Stabilizer (OS): Engage the OS switch to reduce camera shake, especially at longer focal lengths or slower shutter speeds. Different OS modes may be available for various shooting scenarios (e.g., static subjects, panning). Refer to the lens's specific manual for detailed OS mode descriptions.
  • Tripod Collar: For extended shooting or when using a tripod/monopod, utilize the integrated tripod collar for better balance and stability.

Using with TC-1401 Teleconverter:

  • Effective Focal Length: The TC-1401 multiplies the lens's focal length by 1.4x. For example, the 150-600mm lens becomes a 210-840mm lens.
  • Effective Aperture: The teleconverter also reduces the effective aperture by one stop. The F5-6.3 lens will become F7-9. This may affect low-light performance and depth of field.
  • Autofocus Performance: Autofocus is retained with the TC-1401, typically up to an effective aperture of F8. Performance may vary depending on camera model and lighting conditions.
  • Image Quality: While designed to maintain high image quality, using a teleconverter can sometimes introduce minor degradation. For optimal results, ensure stable shooting conditions and proper focus.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning Lens Elements: Use a soft, clean microfiber cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. For stubborn smudges, use a small amount of lens cleaning fluid applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
  • Cleaning Lens Body: Wipe the lens and teleconverter body with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the lens and teleconverter in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Always attach lens caps when not in use.
  • Dust and Splash Resistance: The lens and teleconverter feature a dust and splash-proof design. While this offers protection, avoid exposing them to heavy rain or direct water spray.

Troubleshooting

  • Blurry Images:
    • Ensure the lens is properly focused.
    • Check for camera shake; use a faster shutter speed, engage the Optical Stabilizer (OS), or use a tripod/monopod.
    • Verify lens elements are clean.
  • Autofocus Not Working:
    • Ensure the AF/MF switch on the lens is set to AF.
    • Check that the lens and teleconverter are securely mounted to the camera.
    • In very low light or with low-contrast subjects, autofocus may struggle. Switch to manual focus if necessary.
    • With the teleconverter, autofocus performance may be reduced if the effective aperture is smaller than F8.
  • Lens Not Recognized by Camera:
    • Remove and reattach the lens and teleconverter, ensuring a firm connection.
    • Clean the electronic contacts on both the lens, teleconverter, and camera body with a clean, dry cloth.
