3. Setup
3.1 Attaching the Lens to Your Camera
- Ensure your camera is turned off.
- Remove the rear lens cap from the lens and the body cap from your camera.
- Align the red dot on the lens barrel with the red dot on your camera's lens mount.
- Insert the lens into the camera mount and rotate it clockwise until it clicks securely into place. Do not force the lens.
3.2 Attaching the Lens Hood
The rectangular metal lens hood helps to prevent flare and protect the front element. Align the hood with the lens and twist gently until it locks into position. Ensure it is securely attached and correctly oriented.
3.3 Removing Lens Caps
Before use, remove the front lens cap by gently pulling it off. To remove the rear lens cap, twist it counter-clockwise while holding the lens firmly.
4. Operating the Lens
4.1 Focusing
The Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH is a manual focus lens. To focus, rotate the focus ring until your subject appears sharp in the viewfinder. The distance scale on the lens barrel indicates the current focus distance in both meters and feet.
4.2 Adjusting Aperture
The aperture ring is located near the camera mount. Rotate this ring to select your desired aperture (f-stop). The lens offers apertures from f/2.8 (wide open) to f/22 (minimum aperture). A wider aperture (smaller f-number) allows more light and creates a shallower depth of field, while a narrower aperture (larger f-number) allows less light and creates a greater depth of field.
4.3 Depth of Field Scale
The depth of field scale on the lens barrel provides an indication of the range of distances that will appear acceptably sharp at a given aperture and focus distance. Use this scale to pre-focus or to understand the extent of sharpness in your images.
5. Maintenance and Care
5.1 Cleaning the Lens
- Lens Elements: Use a soft lens brush or a blower to remove dust. For smudges or fingerprints, apply a small amount of lens cleaning fluid to a clean microfiber cloth and gently wipe the lens surface in a circular motion from the center outwards. Avoid excessive pressure.
- Lens Body: Wipe the lens barrel with a clean, dry, soft cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or solvents.
5.2 Storage
When not in use, store the lens with both front and rear caps attached in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, consider using a dehumidified environment to prevent mold growth.
5.3 General Precautions
- Avoid exposing the lens to sudden temperature changes, which can cause condensation.
- Do not drop or subject the lens to strong impacts.
- Keep the lens away from strong magnetic fields.
- Do not attempt to disassemble the lens. Repairs should only be performed by authorized service personnel.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Lens not attaching to camera | Incorrect alignment; obstruction | Ensure red dots are aligned. Check for any debris on the mount. Do not force. |
| Images appear blurry | Incorrect focus; dirty lens element; camera shake | Verify focus setting. Clean lens elements. Use a faster shutter speed or tripod. |
| Dust or spots visible in images | Dust on lens elements or camera sensor | Clean lens elements as described in Section 5.1. If spots persist, clean camera sensor or consult camera manual. |
| Lens hood loose | Improper attachment | Re-attach the lens hood, ensuring it clicks securely into place. |
