SWIMLINE HYDROTOOLS Pool Sand Filter Pump Instruction Manual
Model: 71405
Brand: Swimline
Product Overview
The SWIMLINE HYDROTOOLS Pool Sand Filter Pump is designed for efficient water filtration in above-ground and inground pools. This system optimizes sand placement for superior filtration, consistent performance, and effective backwashing, ensuring clean water quality.
It features an oversized 14-inch tank capable of holding up to 60 pounds of sand, suitable for pools up to 10,500 gallons. The integrated 0.43 THP 2400 GPH pump operates with low noise levels and is DOE compliant. The complete combo includes the tank, pump, filter base, 4-way multi-port valve, and necessary hardware for quick setup.
The multi-port valve offers easy-to-understand settings for various operations, including Filtration, Backwash, Rinse, and Winter.
Setup and Assembly
Proper assembly is crucial for the optimal performance of your sand filter pump. Follow these steps carefully:
- Placement: Position the filter pump on a firm, level surface near your pool. Ensure it is protected from direct weather exposure if possible.
- Tank Preparation: Remove the multi-port valve from the top of the tank. Ensure the internal lateral pipe is centered and free from debris.
- Adding Sand: Carefully add the recommended amount of filter sand (up to 60 lbs for this 14-inch model) into the tank. Ensure the lateral pipe remains centered during this process.
- Multi-Port Valve Installation: Place the multi-port valve onto the tank, aligning it correctly with the lateral pipe. Secure it firmly using the provided screws and bolts. Tighten screws gradually and evenly to ensure a proper seal.
- Pump Connection: Connect the pump to the filter tank using the provided hoses. Ensure all connections are tight and sealed to prevent leaks. Use plumber's tape on threaded connections for a secure fit.
- Pool Connections: Connect the filter pump system to your pool's skimmer and return lines using the appropriate hoses and adapters. Verify all clamps and fittings are securely fastened.
- Priming the Pump: Before starting, ensure the pump is primed by filling the pump's strainer basket with water. Replace the lid securely.

Operating Instructions
The 4-way multi-port valve allows for different operating modes. Always turn off the pump before changing valve settings to prevent damage.
- Filtration: This is the standard operating mode for daily pool cleaning. Water is drawn from the pool, filtered through the sand, and returned to the pool.
- Backwash: Used to clean the sand filter. Water flows in reverse through the filter, dislodging trapped debris, and is discharged through the waste port. Perform when pressure gauge reading is 8-10 PSI above normal starting pressure.
- Rinse: After backwashing, this mode is used to flush out any remaining dirty water from the filter before returning to filtration mode. Run for 30-60 seconds.
- Winter: This setting is used to prepare the filter for winter storage, allowing for drainage and preventing damage from freezing water.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your sand filter pump:
- Backwashing: Perform backwashing regularly, typically when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI higher than its clean starting pressure. This removes accumulated debris from the sand.
- Strainer Basket Cleaning: Periodically check and clean the pump's strainer basket to remove large debris that could impede water flow and damage the pump.
- Sand Replacement: Filter sand typically lasts approximately 5 years, depending on water chemistry and backwashing frequency. Replace the sand when filtration efficiency significantly decreases.
- Winterizing: For colder climates, properly winterize the pump and filter to prevent freezing damage. This involves draining all water from the system and storing components as recommended.

Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Low Water Flow / Low Pressure | Clogged strainer basket, dirty filter sand, air leak in suction line. | Clean strainer basket. Backwash and rinse filter. Check all connections for air leaks and tighten. |
| Cloudy Pool Water | Insufficient filtration time, dirty filter sand, improper water chemistry. | Increase filtration time. Backwash and rinse filter. Test and adjust pool water chemistry (pH, alkalinity, chlorine). |
| Water Leaking from Connections | Loose connections, worn O-rings, damaged fittings. | Tighten all hose clamps and threaded connections. Inspect O-rings for damage and replace if necessary. Check fittings for cracks. |
| Pump Not Starting | No power, motor overload, seized impeller. | Check power supply and circuit breaker. Allow motor to cool if overloaded. Consult a qualified technician for seized impeller. |
