4. Setup

  1. Unpacking and Inspection: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect the machine and accessories for any signs of damage during transit. Report any damage immediately to your supplier.
  2. Placement: Position the grinder on a firm, level, and stable workbench or surface. Ensure there is adequate space around the machine for safe operation and tool manipulation.
  3. Fill Water Trough: Fill the water trough with clean water until the grinding stone is submerged approximately 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 inches). This ensures proper cooling during operation.
  4. Attach Universal Support: Mount the universal support bar into the designated holes on the machine. Secure it firmly with the locking knobs. This bar will hold various jigs and guides.
  5. Power Connection: Connect the power cord to a suitable grounded electrical outlet (230V). Ensure the power switch is in the 'OFF' position before plugging in.

5. Operating Instructions

The Tiger 2500 operates at a slow speed with water cooling, which is crucial for maintaining the temper of your tools and achieving a superior edge.

5.1. Basic Grinding Process

  1. Power On: Press the green 'ON' button. The grinding stone will begin to rotate slowly.
  2. Set Angle: Use the included angle gauge to determine and set the desired sharpening angle for your tool. Adjust the height of the universal support bar until the tool, when placed on the stone, matches the angle on the gauge.
  3. Grinding: Gently bring the tool into contact with the rotating grinding stone. Apply light, consistent pressure. Move the tool slowly and evenly across the stone to ensure uniform material removal. The water will keep the tool cool.
  4. Check for Burr: Continue grinding until a small burr (a thin wire edge) forms along the entire length of the cutting edge on the opposite side. This indicates that you have ground the entire bevel.

5.2. Using the Universal Grinding Jig 70

The Universal Grinding Jig 70 is designed for sharpening chisels, plane irons, and other tools with straight edges.

  • Insert the tool into the jig and tighten the clamping screws securely.
  • Place the jig onto the universal support bar.
  • Adjust the support bar height to achieve the correct angle using the angle gauge.
  • Slide the jig back and forth along the support bar, ensuring the tool maintains consistent contact with the grinding stone.

5.3. Honing and Polishing

After grinding, the leather honing wheel is used to remove the burr and polish the edge to razor sharpness.

Figure 5.4: The robust water tank prevents the cutting edge from overheating and losing its temper.

  1. Apply Honing Paste: Apply a small amount of the included honing paste to the leather honing wheel. Spread it evenly.
  2. Honing: With the machine running, gently bring the tool's cutting edge into contact with the rotating leather wheel. The wheel rotates away from the edge.
  3. Alternate Sides: Alternate honing both sides of the bevel until the burr is completely removed and the edge feels smooth and sharp.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Tiger 2500 Wet Grinder.

  • Drain Water Trough: After each use, or at least daily, drain the water from the trough to prevent algae growth and corrosion. Clean the trough with a brush to remove any grinding residue.
  • Refill Water: Always use fresh, clean water when operating the machine.
  • Grinding Stone Care: Over time, the grinding stone may become uneven or glazed. Use a stone dresser (often an optional accessory) to true and clean the surface, restoring its cutting ability.
  • Leather Honing Wheel: Periodically reapply honing paste to the leather wheel as needed. If the wheel becomes excessively worn or damaged, it can be replaced.
  • General Cleaning: Wipe down the machine's exterior with a damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Storage: Store the machine in a dry, dust-free environment when not in use.
