Setup

1. Unpacking and Initial Inspection

2. Battery Installation and Charging

• Locate the EN-EL18a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery and the MH-26a Battery Charger.
• Insert the battery into the charger. Connect the charger to a power outlet. The charging indicator will show the charging status.
• Once fully charged, remove the battery from the charger.
• Open the battery chamber cover on the camera body and insert the charged battery, ensuring correct orientation. Close the cover securely.

3. Memory Card Insertion

The Nikon D5 (XQD Version) uses XQD memory cards. The camera features dual XQD card slots.

• Open the memory card slot cover.
• Insert an XQD card into one of the slots until it clicks into place. Ensure the card is oriented correctly.
• Close the memory card slot cover.

4. Attaching the Lens and Accessories

• Remove the body cap from the camera and the rear cap from your NIKKOR lens.
• Align the mounting marks on the lens with those on the camera body and rotate the lens until it clicks into place.
• Attach the AN-DC15 Strap to the camera's strap lugs.
• Install the DK-27 Eyepiece Adapter and DK-17F Fluorine-Coated Finder Eyepiece if desired.

5. Initial Power-On and Basic Settings

Turn the camera on using the power switch. Follow the on-screen prompts to set the language, date, time, and time zone. Format the memory card before first use to ensure optimal performance.

Operating the Camera

1. Shooting Modes

The D5 offers various shooting modes to suit different photographic needs:

• P (Programmed Auto): Camera sets shutter speed and aperture for optimal exposure.
• S (Shutter-Priority Auto): User sets shutter speed, camera sets aperture. Ideal for controlling motion blur.
• A (Aperture-Priority Auto): User sets aperture, camera sets shutter speed. Ideal for controlling depth of field.
• M (Manual): User controls both shutter speed and aperture.

2. Autofocus System

The D5 features the Multi-CAM 20K 153-Point AF System with 99 cross-type sensors, providing precise and rapid autofocus. It supports various AF-area modes, including single-point AF, dynamic-area AF, group-area AF, and auto-area AF.

3. ISO Sensitivity

The camera boasts a native ISO range of 100 to 102,400, expandable up to ISO 3,280,000 (Hi-5), allowing for exceptional performance in diverse lighting conditions, including very low light.

4. Continuous Shooting

Achieve high-speed continuous shooting at up to 12 frames per second (fps) with full AE/AF tracking, or 14 fps with mirror up and fixed focus/exposure, capturing decisive moments with ease.

5. Video Recording

Record stunning 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) video at 30, 25, or 24p. The camera also supports Full HD 1080p recording at various frame rates. Advanced video features include simultaneous external and internal recording, Flat Picture Control, and Zebra Stripes.

6. Display and Interface

The 3.2-inch 2.36m-dot touchscreen LCD monitor provides intuitive control for selecting AF points, adjusting settings, reviewing images, and navigating menus with a smartphone-like interface.

Maintenance

1. Camera Body Care

• Keep the camera clean and dry. Avoid exposure to dust, dirt, and moisture.
• Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe the camera body. For stubborn dirt, a slightly dampened cloth can be used, followed by a dry cloth.
• Do not use organic solvents or strong cleaning agents.

2. Lens Care

• Always keep lens caps on when the lens is not in use.
