Durpower SN-303

Durpower Replacement Turntable Stylus Instruction Manual

Model: SN-303 (Compatible with Sansui P-D31, P-M7)

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Durpower replacement phonograph turntable stylus. This stylus is designed as a direct replacement for Sansui SN-303 needles and is compatible with Sansui turntable models P-D31 and P-M7. It features a .7 mil diamond tip and supports playback speeds of 33 and 45 RPM.

Important Note: This replacement stylus is intended for use with the original cartridge. If your turntable's original cartridge has been replaced with a different type, this stylus may not fit correctly.

2. Safety Information

  • Handle the stylus with care. The diamond tip is delicate and can be damaged by impact or improper handling.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always turn off and unplug your turntable before attempting to install or remove the stylus.
  • Avoid touching the stylus tip with bare fingers, as oils and dirt can degrade sound quality and damage the tip.

3. Installation

  1. Preparation: Ensure your turntable is powered off and unplugged. Gently lift the tonearm and secure it in its rest.
  2. Removing the Old Stylus: Carefully grasp the sides of the old stylus assembly (the plastic housing, not the needle itself) and pull it gently downwards and forwards, away from the cartridge body. It should detach with minimal force. Avoid twisting or bending.
  3. Installing the New Stylus: Hold the new Durpower stylus by its plastic housing. Align the stylus with the cartridge body, ensuring the small tab or groove on the stylus matches the corresponding slot on the cartridge.
  4. Secure the Stylus: Gently push the new stylus upwards and inwards into the cartridge until it clicks securely into place. Do not force it. Verify that it is seated firmly and flush with the cartridge body.
  5. Final Check: Visually inspect the stylus to ensure it is straight and properly aligned.

4. Operation

Once the stylus is correctly installed, you can resume normal operation of your turntable.

  1. Place a record on the turntable platter.
  2. Select the appropriate speed (33 or 45 RPM) on your turntable.
  3. Gently lower the tonearm, allowing the stylus to rest in the record's groove.
  4. Adjust volume as desired.

5. Maintenance

  • Stylus Cleaning: Regularly clean the stylus tip to remove dust and debris that can accumulate from records. Use a soft stylus brush, brushing gently from back to front (never side-to-side or front-to-back).
  • Record Care: Keep your records clean to minimize wear on the stylus and improve sound quality.
  • Stylus Life: A stylus has a finite lifespan. Over time, the diamond tip will wear, leading to degraded sound quality and potential record damage. Replace the stylus when sound quality noticeably diminishes, typically after 500-1000 hours of playback, depending on usage and record condition.

6. Troubleshooting

No Sound or Distorted Sound:
  • Ensure the stylus is fully seated in the cartridge.
  • Check all audio connections from the turntable to your amplifier/receiver.
  • Verify the correct input is selected on your amplifier.
  • Clean the stylus tip.
  • The stylus may be worn and require replacement.
Skipping or Jumping:
  • Check if the record is clean and free of dust or scratches.
  • Ensure the turntable is on a stable, level surface.
  • Verify the tonearm's tracking force and anti-skate settings (refer to your turntable's manual for specific adjustments).
  • The stylus may be damaged or worn.
Stylus Does Not Fit:
  • Confirm that your turntable uses the original cartridge. This stylus is a replacement for the Sansui SN-303 needle and is designed for specific Sansui cartridges. If your cartridge has been replaced, this stylus may not be compatible.
