Figure 1: Irudek 259 Semi-Static Lanyard. This image shows the Irudek 259 Semi-Static Lanyard, featuring its bifurcated rope and two attached steel karabiners. The lanyard is designed for work positioning and fall protection.

Key Features:

  • Bifurcated semi-static rope, 11 mm diameter, 1.8 m long.
  • Includes 2 steel karabiners with 55 mm opening.
  • Complies with EN 358 (Work Positioning Systems) and EN 362 (Connectors) standards.

4. Setup and Installation

The Irudek 259 Lanyard is designed for direct connection to a harness and an anchor point or structure. Follow these steps for proper setup:

  1. Inspect Equipment: Before each use, thoroughly inspect the lanyard, rope, stitching, and karabiners for any signs of wear, cuts, abrasion, corrosion, deformation, or other damage. Ensure the karabiner gates open and close smoothly and lock securely.
  2. Connect to Harness: Attach the central loop of the lanyard to the ventral or lateral attachment points of your work positioning harness, as appropriate for your task. Ensure the connection is secure and correctly oriented.
  3. Connect to Anchor Point/Structure: Use the karabiners at the ends of the bifurcated rope to connect to suitable anchor points or structural elements. Ensure the karabiners are fully closed and locked. Avoid loading karabiners across their gate or minor axis.
  4. Verify Connections: Double-check all connections to ensure they are secure and correctly made before applying any load.

5. Operating Instructions

The Irudek 259 Lanyard is primarily used for work positioning. It allows the user to be supported in tension or suspension in a way that prevents a fall. It can also be used as a restraint lanyard to prevent access to a fall hazard.

  1. Work Positioning:
    • Connect both ends of the lanyard to suitable anchor points or wrap around a structure and connect back to the harness, creating a secure work position.
    • Adjust the length of the lanyard to achieve the desired work position, ensuring tension is maintained to prevent slack.
    • Always use a separate fall arrest system in conjunction with work positioning equipment, unless the work positioning system itself is certified as a fall arrest system. The Irudek 259 is a work positioning lanyard (EN 358) and requires a separate fall arrest system if there is a risk of falling.
  2. Restraint System:
    • Connect one end of the lanyard to an anchor point and the other to the harness.
    • Ensure the length of the lanyard is adjusted so that the user cannot reach a position where a fall could occur.
  3. Transitioning: When moving between anchor points, use the bifurcated design to maintain continuous connection. Always ensure one karabiner is securely attached before detaching the other.

6. Maintenance and Inspection

Regular inspection and proper maintenance are crucial for the safety and longevity of your Irudek 259 Lanyard.

6.1. Routine Inspection (Before Each Use):

  • Rope: Check for cuts, abrasions, fraying, discoloration, melting, or chemical damage. Pay close attention to areas near terminations and karabiners.
  • Stitching: Examine all load-bearing stitching for loose threads, cuts, or damage.
  • Karabiners: Inspect for cracks, deformation, corrosion, sharp edges, or excessive wear. Ensure the gate opens freely, closes automatically, and the locking mechanism functions correctly.
  • Labels: Verify that all product labels are present and legible.

6.2. Periodic Inspection (Competent Person):

In addition to routine inspections, the equipment must be inspected by a competent person at least every 12 months, or more frequently depending on usage and environmental conditions. Maintain a record of all periodic inspections.

6.3. Cleaning:

Clean the lanyard with mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to air dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

6.4. Discarding Equipment:

Immediately remove the lanyard from service and destroy it if:

  • It has been subjected to a fall arrest force.
  • Any damage or excessive wear is detected during inspection.
  • There is any doubt about its safety or integrity.
  • The service life limit (if specified by the manufacturer) has been reached.

7. Storage

Store the Irudek 259 Lanyard in a cool, dry, dark, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, UV radiation, extreme temperatures, corrosive substances, and sharp objects. Ensure it is clean and dry before storage.

8. Troubleshooting

For safety equipment like the Irudek 259 Lanyard, "troubleshooting" primarily involves rigorous inspection and adherence to safety protocols. There are no user-serviceable parts or common "malfunctions" in the traditional sense.

  • Issue: Lanyard appears damaged or worn.
Action: Immediately remove from service. Do not attempt to repair. Destroy and replace the equipment.
  • Issue: Karabiner gate does not close or lock properly.
Action: Immediately remove from service. Do not attempt to force or repair. Destroy and replace the karabiner or entire lanyard if integrated.
  • Issue: Uncertainty about equipment's safety or history.
Action: If there is any doubt about the equipment's integrity or if its history (e.g., exposure to a fall) is unknown, remove it from service.

Always prioritize safety. When in doubt, discard the equipment and replace it.
