2. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and to prevent damage to your records or turntable. Always handle the stylus with extreme care.

2.1 Safety Precautions

  • Always power off and unplug your turntable before beginning installation.
  • Avoid touching the stylus tip with your fingers, as oils and dirt can degrade sound quality.
  • Work in a well-lit area with a stable surface.

2.2 Removing the Old Stylus

  1. Gently lift the tonearm from its rest and secure it if your turntable has a locking mechanism.
  2. Locate the existing stylus on the cartridge. It is typically a small, removable component.
  3. Depending on your cartridge type, the old stylus may slide off, clip off, or require a gentle pull. Refer to your turntable's original manual for specific removal instructions. Always pull straight forward or down, avoiding sideways force.

2.3 Installing the New Stylus

  1. Carefully remove the new Durpower stylus from its packaging. Hold it by the plastic body, not the needle.
  2. Align the new stylus with the cartridge housing. Ensure the orientation is correct (the needle should point downwards).
  3. Gently push or slide the new stylus onto the cartridge until it clicks into place or feels securely seated. Do not force it.
  4. Visually inspect the stylus to ensure it is straight and fully seated. The needle should be clearly visible and centered.

3. Operating Instructions

Once the stylus is installed, you can resume normal turntable operation. The Durpower stylus is designed for both 33 RPM and 45 RPM records.

  • Ensure your turntable's speed setting matches the record you are playing (33 RPM for LPs, 45 RPM for singles).
  • Gently lower the tonearm onto the record's lead-in groove. Avoid dropping the tonearm, as this can damage the stylus or record.
  • After playback, carefully lift the tonearm and return it to its rest.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance of your stylus will prolong its life and ensure consistent sound quality.

4.1 Stylus Cleaning

Dust and debris can accumulate on the stylus tip, leading to distorted sound and increased record wear. Clean your stylus regularly, ideally before each listening session or after every few plays.

  1. Use a dedicated stylus cleaning brush (not included) or a very soft, fine-bristled brush.
  2. Brush the stylus gently from back to front (from the base of the cantilever towards the tip). Never brush side-to-side or front-to-back, as this can damage the cantilever.
  3. For stubborn dirt, a small amount of specialized stylus cleaning fluid (not included) can be applied to the brush before cleaning.

4.2 When to Replace Your Stylus

A stylus has a finite lifespan. Over time, the diamond tip wears down, affecting sound quality and potentially damaging your records. Replace your stylus if you notice:

  • Significant degradation in sound quality (e.g., dullness, distortion, sibilance).
  • Increased skipping or tracking issues.
  • Visible wear or damage to the stylus tip under magnification.

The typical lifespan of a diamond stylus is between 500 and 1,000 hours of playback, depending on care and record condition.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues, review the following common problems and solutions.

5.1 No Sound or Low Volume

  • Check Connections: Ensure all audio cables from the turntable to your amplifier/receiver are securely connected.
  • Phono Preamp: Confirm your amplifier has a 'Phono' input or that you are using an external phono preamplifier if required.
  • Stylus Seating: Re-check that the stylus is fully and correctly seated in the cartridge.

5.2 Distorted or Unclear Sound

  • Clean Stylus: A dirty stylus is a common cause of distortion. Clean it as described in Section 4.1.
  • Stylus Wear: If the stylus is old, it may be worn out and require replacement.
  • Tracking Force: Ensure your turntable's tracking force is set correctly according to your turntable's manual. Incorrect tracking force can cause distortion and premature stylus wear.

5.3 Skipping

  • Clean Record: A dirty or dusty record can cause skipping. Clean your records thoroughly.
  • Tracking Force: Insufficient or excessive tracking force can lead to skipping. Adjust according to your turntable's manual.
  • Anti-Skate: Ensure your turntable's anti-skate setting is properly adjusted.
  • Level Surface: Verify that your turntable is placed on a perfectly level surface.
  • Damaged Record: Inspect the record for scratches or warps.
