Introduction
This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the ALTECH 1160 Duo Filter. This system is designed to protect plumbing and heating equipment from corrosion and limescale buildup, ensuring optimal performance and longevity. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and use.
Safety Information
- Ensure the main water supply is turned off before beginning any installation or maintenance.
- Verify that all connections are secure and watertight to prevent leaks.
- Do not exceed the maximum operating pressure of 8 bars (116 PSI).
- Do not exceed the maximum operating temperature of 45 degrees Celsius (113°F).
- Installation should be performed by a qualified professional if you are unsure about any steps.
Product Overview
The ALTECH 1160 Duo Filter system includes two filtration stages:
- Sediment Filter (20µ): Removes suspended solids such as sand, rust, and silt from the water.
- Polyphosphate Filter: Prevents limescale formation and corrosion in pipes and heating elements.
The system is supplied with the necessary cartridges, a mounting bracket, and a wrench for maintenance.

Setup and Installation
Required Tools (Not Included):
- Pipe cutter or saw
- Thread sealant (PTFE tape or pipe dope)
- Drill and appropriate bits for mounting bracket
- Screwdriver
Installation Steps:
- Turn off Water Supply: Locate the main water shut-off valve and turn it off. Open a nearby faucet to relieve pressure in the pipes.
- Choose Installation Location: Select a suitable location for the filter, typically under a sink or near the main water inlet, ensuring easy access for cartridge replacement. The filter should be installed on the cold water line.
- Mount the Bracket: Use the provided mounting bracket to secure the filter housing to a sturdy surface. Mark and drill pilot holes, then attach the bracket using appropriate screws.
- Install Filter Cartridges: Unscrew the filter housings using the provided wrench. Remove the protective wrapping from the sediment and polyphosphate cartridges. Insert each cartridge into its respective housing, ensuring it is seated correctly. The sediment filter typically goes into the first housing (inlet side) and the polyphosphate into the second.
- Connect Plumbing: Cut into the cold water line at the chosen installation point. Install appropriate fittings (not included) to connect the 3/4" female inlet and outlet ports of the filter to your plumbing system. Apply thread sealant to all connections. Ensure the water flow direction matches the arrows on the filter head.
- Check for Leaks: Slowly turn on the main water supply. Inspect all connections for leaks. If leaks occur, turn off the water, tighten connections, and recheck.
- Flush the System: Open a nearby cold water faucet and let the water run for several minutes to flush out any air or fine particles from the new cartridges. The water may appear cloudy initially; this is normal. Continue flushing until the water runs clear.
Operating Instructions
Once installed and flushed, the ALTECH 1160 Duo Filter operates automatically. Water flows through the sediment filter first, removing particles, and then through the polyphosphate filter, which treats the water to prevent limescale and corrosion.
No user intervention is required during normal operation. Monitor water pressure occasionally; a significant drop in pressure may indicate that the sediment filter is clogged and requires replacement.
Maintenance
Cartridge Replacement:
The lifespan of the cartridges depends on water quality and usage. It is generally recommended to replace cartridges every 6 to 12 months, or sooner if a noticeable drop in water pressure or a change in water quality occurs.
- Turn off Water Supply: Shut off the main water supply to the filter.
- Relieve Pressure: Open a nearby cold water faucet to relieve pressure in the system.
- Unscrew Housings: Place a bucket underneath the filter to catch any spilled water. Use the provided wrench to unscrew the filter housings.
- Remove Old Cartridges: Discard the old sediment and polyphosphate cartridges.
- Clean Housings: Clean the inside of the filter housings with warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Inspect the O-rings for any damage; replace if necessary. Lubricate O-rings with food-grade silicone grease if available.
- Install New Cartridges: Remove new cartridges from their packaging. Insert the new sediment filter into the first housing and the new polyphosphate filter into the second housing.
- Reassemble: Screw the housings back onto the filter head by hand until snug, then use the wrench for a final quarter-turn to ensure a tight seal. Do not overtighten.
- Restore Water Supply and Flush: Slowly turn on the main water supply. Check for leaks. Flush the system by running a cold water faucet for several minutes until the water runs clear and all air is purged.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Low Water Pressure | Clogged sediment filter. | Replace the sediment filter cartridge. |
| Water Leaks from Housing | Loose housing, damaged O-ring, or incorrect cartridge seating. | Tighten housing, inspect and replace O-ring if damaged, ensure cartridge is seated correctly. |
| Water is Cloudy After Cartridge Change | Air in the system or fine particles from new cartridges. | Flush the system by running water for several minutes until clear. |
| No Improvement in Limescale/Corrosion | Polyphosphate cartridge exhausted or incorrect installation. | Replace the polyphosphate cartridge. Verify correct installation and water flow direction. |
