Safety Information

  • Handle the stylus with extreme care. The diamond tip is delicate and can be damaged by improper handling.
  • Avoid touching the stylus tip with your fingers, as oils and dirt can degrade sound quality and damage the tip.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always turn off and unplug your turntable before installing or removing the stylus.

Package Contents

Verify that your package contains the following item:

  • 1 x Durpower Diamond Phonograph Turntable Needle (Model 274-DS73 / ST160)

Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to safely replace your turntable needle:

  1. Power Off: Ensure your turntable is turned off and unplugged from the power outlet.
  2. Locate Stylus: Gently lift the tonearm and locate the existing stylus (needle) on the cartridge.
  3. Remove Old Stylus: Carefully grasp the plastic housing of the old stylus. Depending on your cartridge model, it may slide forward, pull down, or clip off. Apply gentle, even pressure. Do not force it. Refer to your turntable's specific manual if you encounter difficulty.
  4. Install New Stylus: Hold the new Durpower stylus by its plastic housing. Align it with the cartridge slot. Gently push or slide it into place until it clicks or seats firmly. Ensure it is fully inserted and secure.
  5. Inspect: Visually inspect the newly installed stylus to ensure it is straight and properly seated. The diamond tip should be visible and undamaged.

Operating Instructions

Once the needle is installed, you can begin playing records:

  1. Power On: Plug in and turn on your turntable.
  2. Select Speed: Ensure your turntable is set to the correct speed for your record (33 1/3 RPM or 45 RPM). This stylus supports both 33 & 45 RPM speeds.
  3. Place Record: Carefully place a record on the turntable platter.
  4. Lower Tonearm: Using the tonearm lift lever, gently lower the tonearm onto the record's lead-in groove. Avoid dropping the tonearm directly onto the record.
  5. Adjust Tracking Force (if applicable): If your turntable allows for tracking force adjustment, refer to your turntable's manual for the recommended setting. Incorrect tracking force can damage records and the stylus.

Maintenance

  • Stylus Cleaning: Regularly clean the stylus tip using a soft stylus brush, brushing gently from back to front (from the base of the cantilever towards the tip). Do not brush side-to-side. Use a specialized stylus cleaning fluid sparingly if necessary.
  • Record Cleaning: Keep your records clean to prevent dust and debris from accumulating on the stylus.
  • Replacement: A diamond stylus typically lasts between 500 to 1000 hours of play, depending on care and record condition. Replace the stylus when you notice a degradation in sound quality, increased skipping, or visible wear on the tip.

Troubleshooting

  • No Sound or Low Volume:
    • Ensure the stylus is fully seated in the cartridge.
    • Check all audio connections from the turntable to your amplifier/receiver.
    • Verify the amplifier/receiver is on the correct input (Phono).
  • Distorted Sound:
    • Clean the stylus tip.
    • Check if the stylus is bent or damaged.
    • Ensure proper tracking force (if adjustable).
    • Verify records are clean and free of debris.
  • Skipping:
    • Clean the stylus tip.
    • Ensure the record is clean and free of scratches.
    • Check for proper tracking force (if adjustable).
    • Ensure the turntable is on a stable, level surface.
