Installation Instructions

1. Preparation

  1. Turn off power: Locate the circuit breaker or fuse that supplies power to the outlet where you intend to install the GFCI. Turn it OFF. Verify power is off using a non-contact voltage tester before proceeding.
  2. Remove old receptacle: Carefully remove the existing wall plate and unscrew the old receptacle from the electrical box. Disconnect the wires, noting their original connections if possible.

2. Wiring the GFCI Receptacle

The GFCI receptacle has two distinct sets of terminals: LINE and LOAD. It is critically important to connect the incoming power wires to the LINE terminals. Connecting to the LOAD terminals when not intended for downstream protection will prevent the GFCI from functioning correctly and may leave the circuit unprotected. The GFCI is designed for back and side wiring connections.

This view highlights the side wiring terminals and includes a blue "NOTICE" sticker indicating that the device is not intended for use in wet and damp locations as defined by 2008 NEC 406.8 requirements, reinforcing its indoor-only application.

3. Mounting and Finishing

  1. Position Wires: Carefully fold the connected wires into the electrical box, ensuring they are not pinched or damaged.
  2. Mount Receptacle: Secure the GFCI receptacle to the electrical box using the provided mounting screws. Ensure it is flush with the wall.
  3. Install Wall Plate: Attach the color-matched standard size wall plate over the GFCI receptacle.
  4. Restore Power: Turn the power back ON at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

Operating Instructions

Initial Power-Up and Self-Test

Upon initial power-up, the GFCI will automatically perform a self-test. The built-in indicator light(s) will illuminate briefly to confirm functionality. If the GFCI is unable to provide safe, protected power, it will deny power and prevent re-setting, indicating a potential issue or "end of life" condition.

TEST and RESET Buttons

The GFCI automatically performs self-tests periodically to ensure continuous ground fault protection. The built-in indicator lights provide quick notification of a tripped condition or an "end of life" status, where the device can no longer provide safe protection.

Maintenance

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
GFCI will not reset after pressing the RESET button.
  • No power supply to the GFCI.
  • Incorrect wiring (LINE and LOAD terminals reversed).
  • A persistent ground fault is present in the circuit or an attached appliance.
  • The GFCI has reached its "end of life" and can no longer function.
  • Verify the circuit breaker or fuse is ON.
  • Turn off power and re-check LINE and LOAD connections.
  • Unplug all appliances from the GFCI and any downstream outlets. If it then resets, an appliance is faulty.
  • If all other solutions fail, replace the GFCI unit.
GFCI trips frequently without apparent reason.
  • A faulty appliance or device connected to the GFCI or a downstream outlet.
  • Moisture or dampness in the electrical circuit or outlet box.
  • An electrical overload on the circuit.
  • Test appliances one by one to isolate the problematic device.
  • Ensure the environment is dry and there is no water ingress.
  • Reduce the number of high-power devices plugged into the circuit simultaneously.
Indicator light is off or flashing in an unusual pattern.
  • No power to the GFCI.
  • The GFCI has tripped.
  • The GFCI is indicating an "end of life" condition.
  • Check the circuit breaker or fuse.
  • Press the RESET button.
  • If the light remains off or flashes, replace the GFCI unit.
Difficulty inserting plugs into the tamper-resistant outlets. This is a normal function of the tamper-resistant (TR) safety shutters.Apply firm, even pressure to both prongs of the plug simultaneously. The internal shutters are designed to open only when both prongs are inserted evenly. Do not force the plug.
