3. Operating the Machine

Stitch Selection:

Use the push buttons on the front panel to navigate through the 60 built-in stitches. The selected stitch number will be displayed on the LCD screen. Refer to the stitch chart on the machine for visual reference of each stitch pattern.

Automatic Needle Threader:

To use the automatic needle threader, ensure the needle is in its highest position. Lower the threader lever and align the hook with the needle eye. Guide the thread through the hook and release the lever to pull the thread through the needle eye.

Automatic Reverse:

Press and hold the Automatic Reverse button to sew in reverse, which is useful for reinforcing stitches at the beginning and end of seams.

Tension Adjustment:

The SINGER Sew Mate 5400 features automatic tension. For most fabrics and threads, this setting will provide balanced stitches. If adjustments are needed for specialized fabrics, refer to the detailed tension adjustment section in the full owner's manual.

Buttonholes:

The machine offers 4 fully automatic 1-step buttonholes. Attach the appropriate buttonhole foot, place the button in the foot's guide, and the machine will automatically sew a buttonhole perfectly sized for your button.

4. Maintenance

Cleaning:

Regular cleaning helps maintain machine performance. Use the brush provided to remove lint and dust from the bobbin area and feed dogs. Do not use compressed air, as it can push debris further into the machine.

Needle Replacement:

Replace the needle frequently, especially after every 8-10 hours of sewing or when working with new projects. Use SINGER needles, types 2020 & 2045, appropriate for your fabric. Ensure the flat side of the needle faces the back of the machine when inserting.
