- Disconnect Power: Always unplug the filter from the electrical outlet before attempting any cleaning or maintenance.
- Remove Filter from Aquarium: Carefully remove the filter from the aquarium. It may contain water, so have a bucket ready.
- Disassemble Filter: Separate the motor head from the filter casing. Remove the filter sponge.
- Clean Filter Sponge: Rinse the filter sponge thoroughly with old aquarium water (from a water change) or dechlorinated tap water. Avoid using untreated tap water as it can kill beneficial bacteria. Gently squeeze the sponge until clean.
- Clean Motor Unit and Impeller: Carefully detach the impeller cover from the motor head. Remove the impeller and clean it and its housing with a small brush to remove any debris or mineral buildup.
- Reassemble and Reinstall: Once all parts are clean, reassemble the filter in reverse order. Ensure all connections are secure. Place the filter back into the aquarium, ensuring it is fully submerged, and then reconnect the power.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Filter not starting/no power | No power supply; damaged cord/plug; impeller jammed. | Check power outlet and plug connection. Inspect cord for damage. Disconnect power, remove and clean impeller. |
| Reduced water flow | Clogged filter sponge; obstructed impeller; air trapped in filter. | Clean filter sponge. Clean impeller and housing. Gently shake the filter while submerged to release trapped air. |
